the ESA is the european space agency. in work based on the Finn Podlentkov who expiermented with superconductors and weird gravity effects the ESA has found a PHYSICAL CONNECTION bettween gravity and magnetism. this is HUGE! this now means gravity can be manipulated with technology. the effect is not huge now but it has just started with more tech research the machines like the Star Wars "repulsor" craft are not far off. they take a spinning super conducting gyroscope (i think about 3600 rpms a minute) and measure the acceleration forces. back in 1999 the Finn had his tech investigated by NASA apparantly yet another dropped ball (unless they put the project into skunk works) type ESA+gravitomagnetic+effect into google

This could well be an advancement in scientific understanding to further open the door to space travel, and of course could have many other more practical applications right here on the ground.

We have reached our limitations with chemical rockets, and at any rate, if we could get beyond those limits with some newfangled energy, we'd still have all the problems of space travel associated with impacting even the smallest particals at very high velocities.

As much as the combined sciences of cosmology/Astronomy/Physics are thought to be for dreamers without much practical application here on earth, I think that the discoveries that will be as important as the wheel or fire will come from those sciences.

If centuries are defined by milestone events, then the twentieth century began in 1944/45 with the real world application of Einstein's theories that began earlier in that century. Another great leap forward will in all likelihood come from crossing another similar scientific discovery or understanding.
