Equality Act Introduced in Congress

I thought that "Law and Justice " would be an appropriate forum for this news article. There is still far to much discrimination against LGBTQ people . Despite the gains that have been made, many states do not prohibit discrimination in housing, employment and places of public accommodation. There is also a movement afoot to allow adoption agencies to discriminate. There is currently no federal protections, except for marriage. Here is a state by state breakdown of what rights LGBTQ people have or don't have. Advocating for LGBTQ Equality | Human Rights Campaign

These are not "special rights" that are being sought. It is about having the same rights as others. Straight, cisgender people can assume that they will be served by a business, have their application for an apartment - or to adopt a child evaluated on their merits without prejudice, and post a picture of their spouse on facebook or put one on their desk without being harassed or even fired. LGBTQ people often cannot make such assumptions.

Here is what's happening:

Equality Act Introduced in Congress

Today, Lambda Legal praised Representatives David Cicilline (D-RI) and Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA) as well as Senators Jeff Merkley (D-OR), Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), and Cory Booker (D-NJ) for introducing H.R. 5, the Equality Act, in the 116th Congress.

This bipartisan legislation will update existing federal nondiscrimination laws, including the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Fair Housing Act, to confirm that discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity is unlawful discrimination based on sex.

The bill agrees with the many court decisions which have concluded that discrimination against LGBT people in employment, housing, education, and credit violates the federal sex discrimination bans.

Many thanks to you and meathead for your brilliant, thoughtful and sensitive comments on an important issue of civil rights. Once again you both succeed in raising that bar on the quality of intellectual discourse and the civil exchange of ideas on the USMB. We can all learn so much from your knowledge and wisdom.

Your right. Nobody besides you who seems to think about it quite a lot. What I think about is human rights a social justice-try it some time -but first you need to GROW THE FUCK UP

There is still far to much discrimination against LGBTQ people.

Sorry, but there is no such thing as LGBTQ people. Next year they will be called something else-- -- -- maybe a few more letters added. They are merely an ever-evolving invention of the Left. The Left created them by giving them a name. There are men and women, and a very few of them have either a physical, mental or emotional disorder that instead of being treated, is now left undiagnosed and untreated by trying to legitimize them with some hokey bullshit name. Go see a doctor or head shrink and get right. The very fact that you have the audacity to claim "there is still discrimination" (people actually see a difference between normal and abnormal) IS the problem. In YOUR mind, there will always be a problem until these sick fucks dominate society and have say over normal people (which is really your goal anyway).

LOL... RegressiveParasite began it's cut/paste deviant thread with "I think"....

As if a single synapse of thought was involved on it's part.

With all the other shit going on in the world it's amazing how some people can be so self centered and focused on who or what they fuck like these freaks. You spend more time shitting in your life than you do fuckin, but it's the core of their existence.

Then they're perplexed as to why the rest of us are disgusted with them and view them as the deviant freaks they are.

Sex is just a natural part of life, but you don't see the rest of us defining ourselves by it.

Again, no one cares. Sodomy is no longer a big deal.

This is a form of lawyers' Full Employment bill. It is an invitation to frivolous litigation. There is no possible LEGAL definition of homosexual. It is analogous to a legal definition of peasoup eaters.

Which of the following is a homosexual?

  • A person who is sexually attracted to people of the same sex, but celebate?
  • An unattractive woman who lives with a female friend?
  • A prison inmate who engages is homosexual activity while in prison?
  • A conventionally-married man who is primarily attracted to men?
  • An effeminate man who is presumed at work to be "gay"?
  • A single man or woman who gets fired from his job and wants to sue his former employer, claiming that it was because s/he was perceived as "gay"?
There is no quantitative data demonstrating that people identifying as "gay" suffer any meaningful economic, employment, housing, or social harm due to their sexual identification. Individual and household incomes are right in line with the norms in the community; there is no indication that gays have any difficulty finding employment, housing, obtaining credit, being accepted at schools, etc.

Indeed, many organizations that have historically rejected homosexuals on moral grounds have been bullied into acceptance, and those continuing to reject the overt sodomite lifestyle are under continuing attack, often through legislation and the courts. Had HRC been elected, THERE IS NO DOUBT that the tax exempt status of Roman Catholic, Orthodox Jewish, Muslim, and Bible-based Christian organizations would be hanging by a thread, if not already void.

Fuck this awful law, and a pox on anyone who supports it.

Right, there is no legal definition of homosexual. But there is a legal definition of discrimination. You're just twisting yourself into a balloon dog trying to define homosexuality, or doing so in order to obfuscate the issue. The law is intended to prevent discriminatory behavior on the par of those who perceive another to be LGBTQ > Yes it is that simple.

That is a boatload of bovine excrement:
https://www.jec.senate.gov/public/_...bc-a99a-fced35ca578c/enda---final-11.5.13.pdf

Workplace discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity remains a problem in the American workplace and carries significant economic consequences. Discrimination by employers leads to a mismatch between qualified workers and the jobs for which they are best suited. This mismatch reduces productivity and harms businesses, workers and the economy. Federal law currently prohibits discrimination based on race, ethnicity, religious affiliation, gender and age, but does not protect against discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. Federal legislation prohibiting such discrimination could result in significant benefits to the U.S. economy.

Despite this progress, workplace discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity persists. The same Pew survey found that more than one-in-five LGBT employees have experienced some form of workplace discrimination.3 Another poll found that 27 percent of those surveyed “would not be happy to have a homosexual manager at work” and an estimated 25 percent “believe it should not be illegal” to discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation in hiring.

beyondblue

People can often feel pressured to fit in with society's conventional ideas of being male or female. Those who don't fit the mould can be subjected to ridicule, intimidation and even physical abuse.

Even though there is an increasing acceptance of LGBTI people in society and greater visibility in the media and public life, many LGBTI people still experience discrimination, harassment and violence at work, school and in social situations.

Discrimination can take the form of:

  • obvious acts of prejudice and discrimination (e.g. someone who is open about being transgender being refused employment or promotion)
  • more subtle, but no less harmful, discrimination that reinforces negative stereotypes and feelings of difference (e.g. use of the word 'gay' as a derogatory term).

The real cost of LGBT discrimination

According to studies carried out in the United States, the United Kingdom and Thailand, between half and two thirds of LGBT students are regularly bullied at school and up to a third skip school to escape harassment.

Many LGBT youth, bullied at school and rejected at home, end up homeless. Up to 40% of homeless young people on the streets of major U.S. cities identify as LGBT or queer, compared with likely less than 10% of the overall youth population.

A U.S. study found that gay and lesbian young people are four times more likely to contemplate or attempt suicide, compared with the general population – while trans youth are ten times more likely to do so.

Sodomite lifestyle? Thank you confirming you bigotry and ignorant idea that being gay is all about sex. No one gives a fuck about who accepts homosexuality, nor does anyone think that acceptance can be forced. This is about how people are treated in society. Plain and simple.

As far as tax exemptions for religious organizations go, I see no reason why they should have tax exempt status for anything that is not directly related to charity. Anything else is a government support of religion in violation of the first amendment. However, if they just stay the fuck out of politics , we probobly won't bother them

Thank you for that moronic, unhinged rant. You never disappoint as far as being entertaining goes. Problem is dude, that we are talking about real human beings here -not freaks or people with disorders-people who are more like you and I than not. People who have lives and loves. People who are part of the wider community and contribute to it. People who have careers, jobs and pay taxes. People who have homes and families, hopes and dreams for the future. And, they are people who's lives are often made more difficult that life already is because of discrimination perpetrated by hatful ignoramuses like you.
