England secedes from EU. Why didn't America let the South secede in 1861?

Secession is common. The original 13 colonies seceded from england in 1776. Was that bad? In the second half of the 20th century, most african states seceded from the european powers they had been part of.

Why does the press always say the Confederacy was a mass of traitors because they tried to secede?

They were traitors to the United States. Don't like it? Tough shit.

They were a federation of states belonging to the same country.
England, Scotland and Wales are three separate countries bound together by a 300 year old treaty.

Well some here in Texas want to leave the Union again and I am about to sign on so I can watch these people here learn that wanting to be your own country is not all it is cracked up to be!

Who will protect texas if putin invades ?

Damn fools joined the union without demanding an out clause.

United Kingdom learned from that and, along with a few other countries, demanded and got out clauses. Most others were blind, dumb and happy. Having no legitimate out, should one of those so deprived could "legitimately" be targeted for bombing and invasion.

Not that anyone would do that.

Anybody know whether any part of The Ukraine had been skookum enough to have an out clause written in - if not, then, yeah....Putin's hands are clean.

Just as will be Junkers hands clean if he bombs one of the no-out clause members should they try to bolt.

Not that just because he could he would. But with President Trump lurking in the background he might feel incentivized. With Mrs. (whadd'll ya gimmee?) Clinton sitting back? What incentive?

Territories were allowed to vote for statehood, but once in not allowed to vote to leave.
Lincoln was the original American traitor.

You can check-in, anytime you like, but you can never leave !

Very, VERY few countries allow this to happen.

Slovakia and Czech Republic were formed out of a separation of one country.
Scotland was given a vote on independence.
The EU allows members to leave.
Montenegro was allowed to leave Serbia.

However in the main you have many situations where leaders don't want to give up their power.

Kosovo and Serbia
Catalonia, Basque Country (and others) and Spain
Corsica and France
Xinjiang, Tibet etc and China
Chechnya and Russia

People like to control others, it's weird.

They did secede...then did something stupid and fired on a U.S. Federal Installation, starting a war they couldn't win. Bummer for them.

HAHAHA. You know nothing about the civil war. The south was not trying to win - they were playing for a tie.. It wasn't really a civil war. The south just wanted to leave. They had no dreams of conquest. THINK
