It's actually addressed in quite a few books. In fact one of the side stories in Webber's Space opera series featuring Honor Harington, involves putting a stop to the 'Genetic Slave' trade.

Ribosomes wouldn't really be sentient though. They're just something that all living things have to make protein and are quite complex in themselves. I wonder how they made one and if this will mean no more using E Coli to make protein in labs. That'd be nice for future biochem students, not to mention the medical advances. :)
