That was the central issue in Dick's book and also the movie loosely based on it, "Blade Runner."

It's actually addressed in quite a few books. In fact one of the side stories in Webber's Space opera series featuring Honor Harington, involves putting a stop to the 'Genetic Slave' trade.

We can't own animals then?

Ribosomes wouldn't really be sentient though. They're just something that all living things have to make protein and are quite complex in themselves. I wonder how they made one and if this will mean no more using E Coli to make protein in labs. That'd be nice for future biochem students, not to mention the medical advances.
