Electric cars have simple engines and don´t need a gear unit. They could be cheap as a Pizza. In 1900, more electric cars were around than gas cars. Yet, when you blame car makers, you should first look into your garage if an electric car dwells there.

MASS transit in CA is complete disaster. It takes hours to go 30-40 miles from bedroom suburbs (where you must live to be affordable) up into Silicon valley. Probably need at least one transfer. Light Rail to Bus? Live 35 miles away and you have to get that first 5-10 miles by bus to Light Rail to Bus to near job then maybe walk a few miles depeneding.
You have to be lucky to be able to have a decent mass transit commute.

Or you can ride a bike to the light rail ..... use a bike car.....get closer to job....then bike over. With your life at risk from angry car commuters.

3 hour Mass transit commute or 50-75 minutes in your own car door to door.
