EBT Cards Can Be Used At ATM's In Pot Shops

Meister got punked.

When it sound this silly, the thing to do is go find it on some real news source -- not 'Nonprofit Quarterly". Or directly to a factcheck.

Interestingly, "comments are disabled for this video". Wonder why.

This thread isn't talking about EBT for pot....it's talking about using EBT cards in ATM's located in the pot shops.

In Colorado benefits other than food stamps are dispensed via EBT cards. Funds designted as food funds still can only be used for food, however withdrawels of cash from other benefits are available with the same card from an ATM. Cash can not be obtained from the food stamp funds account.

That's the way I understand it as well.

Different funds are accessed with the same card but that does not mean the cash can be withdrawn from the food account.

Thanks.

So...... even if there were a legitimate fund source on a card.... on what basis could you possibly want them not to work on ATMs that are in a particular location? Do not all ATM machines work the same way?

Is somebody trying to pass a law based on social manipulation assumptions here?

Wasn't there a similar silly thread a while back about ATMs in strip clubs?

All ATM's don't all work the same. POP terminals at cash registers that also take normal debit and credit cards have to be tied into a system called Quest. ATM's that dispense cash benifits must be hooked into the same system. Merchants that want Quest availability on their terminals or ATM's have to apply.

You cannot use EBT in an ATM anywhere -- pot shop or no pot shop. It doesn't represent money!

Helloo?? Anybody in there???

That's SNAP -- not EBT.

Point from previous post stands: even if you have legitimate funds on a card, what the fuck difference does it make which walls surround the ATM from which you pull it?

Nothing screams "small government" and "personal responsibility" than making laws about which ATMs people are allowed to use. It's for their own good, after all. Right?

Think of the children.

.

Yeah you're right, Doc, why should we care where our tax dollars are going by those who are in need? After all, Welfare has skyrocketed over the 6-7 years.

Using a EBT card.

EBT stands for "Electronic Benefits Transfer". Food Stamps (SNAP) are one of many types of benefits handed out on the cards.

SNAP benefits can only be used on approved food. The other benefits are not limited to food, and can be drawn from any ATM as cash.

It's the same as its always been, just digital. Instead of getting checks in the mail for welfare, unemployment, or anything else, it's deposited on the card.

My point is that if they're so damn needy, why in hell would they even be in a pot shop?
I would feel the same about a casino or liquor store.
If they want to gamble, get drunk, or high, get a friggin' job....but not on my dime (or dollar).

You've never walked into an establishment for the sole purpose of using the ATM??

Have you uh, ever used an ATM?

Check out the sight and read it this time. What you posted is how to get cash from cash benifits. Notice the person has to press "checking". That is where the cash benifits go, not food funds. Food stamp funds go to a separate account.

Until recently Meister didn't think his EBT card would work in one. :dunno:

If you want to make a law that determines where and how people are allowed to spend their government benefits, then do that. Don't try to pretend that you want the government to be "smaller" and "less intrusive" though.

Playing games with ATMs is just stupid and piddly.

Colorado OKs Use of Public Assistance EBT Cards in Pot Shop ATMs

An interesting debate in Colorado concerning marijuana shops was just resolved in a way that goes against what the owners of pot stores wanted. Colorado’s Republican legislators proposed to add stores that sell recreational or medical marijuana to the list of places where recipients of public assistance couldn’t use their EBT cards at ATMs.
However, Democrats on the State, Veterans, and Military Affairs Committee voted along party lines to allow the use of public assistance cards on ATMs in pot shops. Their reasoning is that many neighborhoods are “banking deserts” with few bank outlets and few ATMs. State Senator Irene Aguilar (D-Denver) explained, “I’m not comfortable limiting that access until I’m certain we’ve done that due diligence to make sure people can access their benefits when they need to.” Advocates for the poor agreed, suggesting, as did Terry Scanlon of the Colorado Center on Law & Policy, that they saw the legislation as “unnecessary regulation that could prevent access to benefits needed by low-income Coloradans.”

I'm sure the left will be jubilant about this, after all, the low-income people need a place to cash out their money from Welfare. If they used a bank ATM and then having to stop at their local pot shop.....well, that would be two stops and unnecessary usage of gas, so a one stop shop is economically sound and prudent thing to do. :eusa_eh:

Agreed. What difference does it make if they withdraw the money there in the store or walk across the street to the bank and do it?

The issue I see is why they're allowed to withdraw money from it at all. That's what should change.
