Do you get individual rights in prison?

It appears that many prisoners on long sentences go on hunger strikes. Even politically, Ghandi and lumumba used hunger strikes as their primary weapon whilst in prison. But has anyone ever died in a hunger strike? I think prisons are allowed to force feed striking inmates. How is this legal? Or maybe, do laws apply in prison?
