... for maternity leave, or work shorter hours for whatever reason (often child care), and yet still maintain an equal footing with their male peers professionally, who statistically work longer hours and have short paternity leave, if they go on paternity leave at all?

I ask because at my company I hear it being discussed; why are women so far behind in pay? "We need to 'reduce the pay gap'." They say it's gender discrimination, but I'm not so sure. It's well-documented that women don't work as much, for a variety of reasons. It stands to reason that they, therefore, are not as productive, on average. So why should they maintain parity with those who are working longer (therefore gaining more experience comparatively), and why do we immediately jump to "gender discrimination" as the root cause of the disparity? Is that not unfair to the men, and women for that matter, who spend longer hours at the office and pull in more profits?

Anyway, feel free to share your thoughts.
