Did anyone know that federal law prevents farmers from fixing their own tractors, that's nuts.....

Did anyone know that farmers are prevented from fixing their own tractors, that by federal freakin law they have to hire a contractor to do it....?

This is just nuts....

Farmers fight for the right to repair their own tractors | Fox News

They're attempting to get legislation passed in their states that would enable them, for the first time since the 1998 Digital Millennium Copyright Act, to repair their own tractors or get an independent mechanic to help.

At the root of the morass is the software that helps run modern tractors and their sensors, diagnostic tools, and other high-tech elements. If farmers so much as open the metaphorical hood to check out the computers they could be violating the federal act, reports Modern Farmer.

Mick Minchow, a Nebraska farmer for more than 40 years, is among the many who are fed up, reports Lincoln Journal Star. As it currently stands, any problem with his John Deere 8235 R requires a trip to the dealer and costs him important time.

What he'd like to be able to do, per the paper, is something as simple as looking up the system code to determine if it's a serious problem or something as mundane as replacing a filter.

John Deere's argument, as reported byWired, is that giving farmers free rein over the software would "make it possible for pirates, third-party developers, and less innovative competitors to free-ride off the creativity, unique expression, and ingenuity of vehicle software." Other potential issues that have been floated: the financial hit such a change could wreak on dealerships, and the complications of buying used equipment whose software was improperly changed.

that's nonsense.....

you simply can't copy proprietary software.

statute in question is the1998 Digital Millennium Copyright Act

  • Title III, the “Computer Maintenance Competition Assurance Act,” creates an exemption for making a copy of a computer program by activating a computer for purposes of maintenance or repair.
http://www.copyright.gov/legislation/dmca.pdf

is there some reason you feel entitled to others' property? the corporation pays for R&D. they should profit from it for as long as it's protected.

if there are exceptions which need to be legislated or modifications which you want to suggest, write your senator and representative.

otherwise, like the wingers in montana you don't get to steal property that isn't yours.

It's proprietary software that Deere developed or purchased. Try writing software that will run a combine by itself over your land adjusting for weather and crop conditions without someone driving it. No company opens its software to outsiders. I'm a Deere retiree having worked n IT for them. Even I and my fellow Deere employees are not given access to software code in departments other our own area. That's how tightly they keep control of their software. No real farmer wants or needs to alter software code. The only one wants access is Farmer Hacker Brown. He can take a hike if he thinks he's going to sell Deere software to Case IH or Catepillar.
True, but what John Deere *could* do is to allow Farmer Brown to hook his tractor to a lap top and reset his onw software and run diagnostics, but in all likelihood they have an agreement with major farm equipment makers to compel Farmer Brown to bring it to their shops instead so he CANNOT FIX IT HIMSELF.

that's nonsense.....
you simply can't copy proprietary software.
Allowing owners to buy diagnostic and updateable software is not a violation of any law nor does it require anyone to copy any software.

It could be like any other piece of software that allows you to update your system online or fetch updates manually.

But in all likelihood the farm equipment makers have a deal with the major shop chains to prevent this so that Farmer Brown has to have his tractor towed in for unecessary diagnostics that waste time and money.

Freak'n liberals with their damned tractor fix'n laws

Family farm - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In 2012, the United States had 2,039,093 family farms (as defined by USDA), accounting for 96.7 percent of all farms and 89 percent of census farm area in the United States.[18]

Because of the predominance of family farms, the types of farming conducted on US family farms are essentially those of US agriculture overall. A USDA survey conducted in 2011 estimated that family farms account for 85 percent of US farm production and 85 percent of US gross farm income. Mid-size and larger family farms account for 60 percent of US farm production and dominate US production of cotton, cash grain and hogs. Small family farms account for 26 percent of US farm production overall, and higher percentages of production of poultry, beef cattle, some other livestock and hay.

So in other words any John Deere you buy is not really yours, thats BS. Of course we won't have to deal with those mean ol farmers much longer becasue the controllers will control your every move and your life will not be your own any more than your tractor you paid for is.

Enjoy your Solvent Green,lol.
