"The U.S. Census Bureau reported today that 74 percent of those who have a bachelor's degree in science, technology, engineering and math — commonly referred to as STEM — are not employed in STEM occupations. In addition, men continue to be overrepresented in STEM, especially in computer and engineering occupations. About 86 percent of engineers and 74 percent of computer professionals are men."
"STEM graduates have relatively low unemployment, however these graduates are not necessarily employed in STEM occupations," said Liana Christin Landivar, a sociologist in the Census Bureau's Industry and Occupation Statistics Branch."
"According to new statistics from the 2012 American Community Survey, engineering and computer, math and statistics majors had the largest share of graduates going into a STEM field with about half employed in a STEM occupation. Science majors had fewer of their graduates employed in STEM. About 26 percent of physical science majors; 15 percent of biological, environmental and agricultural sciences majors; 10 percent of psychology majors; and 7 percent of social science majors were employed in STEM."
Majority of STEM College Graduates Do Not Work in STEM Occupations
"The Department of Homeland Security is readying a plan to expand a program that pays U.S. employers to hire foreign STEM students taught in America, a move that could end up punishing American college grads and even the elderly, according to an immigration think tank."
"In pushing to allow more foreign students into the so-called "optional practical training program," DHS said that it will help businesses and colleges by keeping those foreign students in the U.S. following their American-taught science, technology, engineering, and math, or STEM, curriculum."
"But the Center for Immigration Studies said it will punish American STEM students competing for those same jobs. And, they added, in adjusting how the foreign students are categorized as employees, they get out of paying payroll taxes used to help fund programs like Social Security and Medicare."
Feds dangle $12,000 bonus to firms that hire foreign students
This is an example of the Professional Political Class managing our nation into bad economic times.
I personally know several STEM graduates who still cannot find jobs in their career fields after two or more years of job searching. But our government no longer works for us, it worls for Microsoft, IBM, Apple, GE, etc and so the Feds are loading these guys up with all the H1-Bs, black market ilelgals and now giving $12k bonuses to hire alien STEM graduates.
And this is not just a Democrfat administration problem, as the GOP advocates the same type of policies.
Our nation has been taken over by a Corporate Crony Network of CEOs who spin a picture of high demand for these graduates while the truth is that for each job thousands of STEM grads apply.
STEM Grads Are at a Loss
STEM labor shortages?: Microsoft report distorts reality about computing occupations
U.S. pushes for more scientists, but the jobs aren’t there
The Myth of the Science and Engineering Shortage
America Has More Trained STEM Graduates than STEM Job Openings
