We have all read, with great horror, about 23 million people not being able to get healthcare insurance under the new Republican AHCA plan. The CBO report is ballyhooed as claiming that 23 million sick people will be left out in the cold!

The press had used banner headlines, incessant interviews, memes, and all other propaganda tools to drive home just how callous the Republicans are. Only one problem - it's not true.

The CBO did not say that ... what they said was that ...

".. as a consequence, the waivers in those states would have another effect: Community-rated premiums would rise over time, and people who are less healthy (including those with preexisting or newly acquired medical conditions) would ultimately be unable to purchase comprehensive nongroup health insurance at premiums comparable to those under current law, if they could purchase it at all" [my emphasis]

In other words, people with pre-existing conditions would have to pay more (perhaps prohibitively more) for their healthcare insurance. (We will ignore the fact that their healthcare needs will COST more).

AHCA has addressed this issue by including federal government-supported high risk pools - in other words, the person with a pre-existing condition will pay a comparable rate to everybody else, and the extra cost will be borne by the federal government. (Most of it will be funded by the projected $119 billion in cost savings, as a result of the plan)

Of course, this doesn't fit the liberal mantra - so they have chosen to intentionally subvert the context of the CBO report.

.... and the beat goes on.
