Concordia investigating online threat, swastikas on campus, same day as altercation linked to Israel-Hamas war

City News, November 8, 2023:

Montreal police (SPVM) say a student was arrested and three people were injured during an altercation Wednesday afternoon at Concordia University linked to the Israel-Hamas war. Concordia University says it is also investigating an online threat and swastikas found on campus on the same day.

The SPVM says a conflict between two groups of students escalated on campus.

A Concordia spokesperson confirmed to CityNews it involved pro-Israel and pro-Palestinian groups — “but also people from outside our community” — at the Hall building on De Maisonneuve Boulevard.

A 22-year-old student was arrested for allegedly assaulting a 54-year-old security guard, SPVM spokesperson Const. Caroline Chèvrefils told CityNews.

A 19-year-old security guard and a 23-year-old student were also injured, police say. None of the three victims needed treatment in hospital….

‘Go back to Poland, sharmuta,’ Montreal professor tells Jewish students
By Danielle Greyman-Kennard Published: November 10, 2023

Jewish students at Concordia University have faced a large number of verbal and physical threats over the last week.

Footage of University of Montreal Professor Yanise Arab telling Jewish Concordia students to “go back to Poland, sharmuta" (wh*re in Arabic) has circulated online after the November 8 incident drew wide outrage.

The identity of Arab was confirmed by X users and later reconfirmed by multiple media sources.

Arab, a humanities professor, specialized in “dominance and resistance in the Arab world.” However, Arab’s staff page at the university has been removed and it is unclear if he is still employed.

Jewish students at Concordia University facing increasing hostilities
Yesterday, Jewish students were holding posters of the Israeli hostages held by Hamas when they were attacked by other students.

The situation began when a student called the Jewish students a “k*ke” (an offensive term for Jews) and attempted to snatch the posters of hostages. Soon, students began to wrestle for the stolen hostage photos.

A 22-year-old student was arrested for assaulting a security guard during the attack, CBC News reported. Other security guards also suffered injuries during the attack.

Sarah Wolman, a Jewish student at Concordia, told CBC that Jewish students had organized a peaceful demonstration in support of the hostages kidnapped by Hamas. However, pro-Palestinian students had set up a table only meters from the demonstration and they began loudly chanting...

Wolman described the situation as "very scary, very scary as a Jewish person on campus."..

‘We terrified them!’

A day after the violent interaction, pro-Palestinian students were filmed celebrating on university grounds.

“I was at Concordia University,” said the student speaker, “I was at the University. I was at the Hull building that yesterday witnessed a very intense altercation, and I would like to thank every one of you who came out yesterday to show your support. Whether you were there to purchase keffiyehs for charity or whether you were simply there to show our numbers, to show you are standing in solidarity with us. We terrified them!”

Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh was an UNRWA teacher – former agency official.
Tzvi Joffre, Jerusalem Post, March 19, 2024.
Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh worked as a teacher for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) in the past, former UNRWA official Ahmad Oueidat revealed in an interview with the London-based Al-Hiwar TV channel last week, according to footage translated by MEMRI.

“First and foremost, we can mention Ismail Haniyeh, who was an UNRWA teacher, and so was Dr. Talal Naji, Secretary-General of the PFLP-GC,” said Oueidat.

The former UNRWA official said that UNRWA has tried “to constitute a national platform and a long arm, which would enable the Palestinian refugees to obtain their rights and first and foremost – the Right of Return.”

“There used to be quality in [UNRWA’s] education. The teaching cadres really embraced their profession. However, the Americans and the Zionists did not look at this favorably. This is why they insisted on interfering. We, as UNRWA employees, had to deal with that interference. My final position was head of the Professional Development and Curriculum Unit, so I had to deal with it directly. They forced us to remove pictures and various topics….
