Consider that the reality is that with few exceptions (Washington, Jefferson, Jackson, and the Roosevelts come to mind) leadership in US government hasn't been and remains not smart enough to work without direction.

The bottom line is the federal government still has a master, it just isn't natural born citizens any more. The new masters are bloodless entities having all the legal rights of natural born persons with none of the limits of natural born citizens. Corporations own every part of the federal government.

While Nixon and Ford were pioneers, Reagan, working for Don Regan, took corporations to the hoop and slam-dunk sealed corporate dominance of all aspects of the American scene.
