The 2016 Cannes Film Festival comes to an end today with the presentation of this year's awards, topped by the prestigious honoring of the Palme d'Or. There are 21 films in competition this year, and the battle for the Palme includes auteurs like Nicolas Winding Refn, Xavier Dolan, Pedro Almodóvar, Paul Verhoeven and the Dardenne Brothers.

While there's no shortage of international talent to choose from, it is currently the two female filmmakers in competition that are the frontrunners for Palme d'Or: Andrea Arnold ("American Honey") and Maren Ade ("Toni Erdmann"). Despite predictions, the festival always surprises with its awards, so nothing is a sure thing at this point.
