Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of about 420 phytochemicals produced by the cannabis plant. Earlier this month the National Cancer Institute included a new page on their website suggesting that CBD has been shown in clinical trials to kill cancer cells in tumor-induced mice.
  • Studies in mice and rats have shown that cannabinoids may inhibit tumor growth by causing cell death, blocking cell growth, and blocking the development of blood vessels needed by tumors to grow.Laboratory and animal studieshave shown that cannabinoids may be able to kill cancer cells while protecting normal cells.
  • The page goes on to list numerous other health benefits.

The American Cancer Society has recommended that marijuana be removed from schedule I classification (lumped in with heroin and LSD) so that more research can be done involving humans.

CBD, unlike THC, is non-psychoactive. Medicines can be taken in the form of tinctures, lozenges, teas, etc.

CBD and other cannabinoids have been shown to be effective in the treatment of many disorders and diseases. So far;
Antiemetic: Reduces nausea and vomiting.
Anticonvulsant: Suppresses seizure activity.
Antipsychotic: Combats psychosis disorders
Anti-inflammatory: Combats inflammatory disorders.
Anti-oxidant: Combats neurodegenerative disorders.
Anti-tumoral/Anti-cancer: Combats tumor and cancer cells
Anxiolytic/Anti-depressant: Combats anxiety and depression disorders

One of the more promising areas of potential for CBDs is in the cases of formerly non-treatable epilepsy and other seizures.
“"For those patients with treatment-resistant epilepsy who have failed several medications, often many medications, and for whom available options are not promising, and [who] may have exhausted dietary therapies [and] vagus nerve surgical therapies, I think that medical marijuana is an extremely reasonable option at this time,” he said."
~Orrin Devinsky, MD, FAAN, the director of the Comprehensive Epilepsy Center at New York University (NYU)

Parents of children with Davet's Syndrome who formerly had no effective treatment have reported in numerous cases that CBD worked miracles, in some cases a 100% cessation of seizures.

It's a new and promising field of medicine, and one that is bound to confront resistance from manufacturers of more expensive drugs with more heinous side effects.

Oh sure, but not until they have to, a good ways off.

Not pharma companies but...

Scotts (Miracle Grow, Round-up) just bought Santa Rosa based General Hydroponics for $130 million. Scotts is owned by Monsanto.

Actinovate is an organic biofungicide that's ubiquitous among weed growers. That's made by GH, so now Monsanto owns it.

The big players are definitely getting into grow supply.

The Salk Institute for Biological Studies is an independent, non-profit, scientific research institute located in La Jolla, CA. According to Science Watch, Salk "
consistently ranks among the top institutions in the US in terms of research output and quality in the life sciences...In 2004, the Times Higher Education Supplement ranked Salk as the world's top biomedicine research institute, and in 2009 it was ranked number one globally by ScienceWatch in the neuroscience and behavior areas."

Salk is doing some interesting research studying how cannabinoids protect against and even remove the plaques that form on the brain which lead to Alzheimer's.

Although other studies have offered evidence that cannabinoids might be neuroprotective against the symptoms of Alzheimer's, we believe our study is the first to demonstrate that cannabinoids affect both inflammation and amyloid beta accumulation in nerve cells," says Salk Professor David Schubert, the senior author of the paper.

Does just plain weed have the same effect on patients or does the CBD need to be isolated to be effective? Aside from the obvious issues of impairment it would seem to be cheaper to just give them the weed.

The strain Charlotte's Web is among the highest in CBD (20%) and has a negligible amount of THC. Most recreational bud is going to be around 20% THC and 4% or less CBD.

In most job situations you don't want employees getting high. Many people find that getting high is a bad trip. And you don't want to smoke out a kid suffering from Davet's Syndrome.

But, yeah, just smoking a lot of (organically grown) weed is going to fight cancer, relieve pain, lower blood pressure and fight depression.

I saw the documentary on Charlotte's web, I'm all for that.
