Why can congress or the president shutdown the government and the ordinary people that have government/federal jobs have to go without getting paid? The ordinary government/federal work has nothing to do with congress and the president not coming to an agreement. There should be a law that if the government shuts down the ordinary government/federal worker will not be effected. It should just be the legislative and the executive branch of the government not getting paid.

They didn't 'shut down the govt', they merely didn't pass the bill authorizing money for payroll. Essential services are fine, stuff we actually need, they only cut out payroll for non-essential rubbish like the worthless 'Homeless Security' baggage searchers at airports, a welfare program for airlines and the wealthy demographics who can pay for that stuff out of their own pockets in the first place. That's why it doesn't matter how long it lasts; Pelosi and her ilk are just mad because it cuts out some their perks, like drunken pork junkets and using the Air Force as her personal airline.

We know the White House staff was reduced, but no word on whether or not the Congressional dining rooms are closed; probably not, no sense in Pelosi and the Dems reduced to living like the commoners.

More than that, if considered essential (what they call "excepted"), they can order you back to work to continue working anyway, without any income, whether you can afford it or not, and in certain cases, deny you hardship that if you fail to show up and don't work for nuttin', you can lose your job.

When they cut off all salary to Congress and fine each member $5,000 a day and the Speaker and the Majority Leader $30,000 a day until the shutdown is ended, then I'll believe in the system. And I'm sure you'll see these shutdowns resolved very quickly then.
