Toys ‘R’ Us founder Charles Lazarus dies as retailer plans to shut down all U.S. stores
Thursday, March 22, 2018, The founder of Toys “R” Us died Thursday as the company planned to liquidate its inventory and close all of its U.S. stores.
Charles Lazarus died at 94 Thursday morning, according to a Toys “R” Us spokesman. “There have been many sad moments for Toys ‘R’ Us in recent weeks, and none more heartbreaking than today’s news about the passing of our beloved founder, Charles Lazarus,” read a statement from the company. Lazarus had visited the company’s New Jersey headquarters just last year, according to the statement. “We will forever be grateful for his positive energy, passion for the customer and love for children everywhere,” the statement read.

The news comes a week after Toys “R” Us announced it would conduct “an orderly wind-down of its U.S. business” and liquidate inventory in all 735 of its U.S. stores. Liquidation sales were scheduled to begin Thursday but were postponed "due to circumstances beyond our control." The sales will likely begin tomorrow, a spokesman said.

Industry executives have announced last ditch efforts to save the renowned toy giant. CEO of Bratz doll-maker MGA Entertainment Isaac Larian said he and other investors would put up $200 million and raise more from other investors to bid on up to 400 Toys "R" Us stores being liquidated.
