The aircraft nearly landed without its landing wheels deployed which would have been devastating to the aircraft and deadly for the passengers.

The initial reports don't suggest pilot error so there is a suspicion there is a software or sensor error that caused the wheels not to be deployed and which caused sensors to fail to report the deployment failure.

Boeing is under considerable pressure from reports of quality problems at its plant, and is still reeling from the 737 Max death crashes.

The 787 Dreamliner is having a lot of incidents reported including a double engine failure in one incident.

Boeing appears to be losing its reputation for safety of it' aircraft.

The Boeing 787 Dreamliner is one again in the spotlight after an incident on Thursday that saw a jet under Vietnam Airlines almost landed at the Melbourne Airport without the landing gear deployed.
According to Simple Flying, the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) created an incident report stating that 787 Dreamliner flight VN781 was approaching land in Melbourne when the Air Traffic Control advised the crew that the jet's landing gear was not extended as it should have been before approaching the runway.
The landing was aborted after the Boeing jet was close to land for over 600 feet. The pilot then maneuvered back up and circled the airport before making a safe landing on the Ho Chi Minh to Melbourne flight.
Industry experts said that if the traffic control team did not notice and alert the crew, the aircraft could have been seriously damaged. Aside from engine and software problems, the Boeing 787 Dreamliner jet could have caught fire.
Some analysts questioned whether the incident had something to do with the pilot error or if the failure to deploy the landing gear was due to an electrical issue. Full details about the report have yet to be revealed.
Just a few months back, the U.S. Department of Justice launched a probe into the Boeing 787 Dreamliner's production after reports emerged about a particular manufacturing plant allegedly having poor production practices.
It is unclear whose fault the latest incident is. On the other hand, some analysts noted that the 787 Dreamliner has been caught in previous incidents including a report of smoke detected in the aircraft cabin of a United Airlines flight.
The Sydney Morning Herald reported that air safety officials have already started investigating the incident. Data from FlightRadar24 showed how the aircraft dropped to around 675 feet before aborting the supposed landing.
Experts said aborted landings can be common sometimes. However, the scenario of coming so close to the runway without the landing gear in place is a rare sight and has raised concerns among industry analysts.
The ATSB clarified that while the investigation is still underway, it will immediately alert the involved groups and airlines should a "critical safety issue" be discovered during the probe. Vietnam Airlines manager Huy Trinh also confirmed that the company is working with Australian authorities to find out what transpired during the incident.
The Boeing 787 Dreamliner isn't the only jet by the U.S. airplane giant that has been put into the hot seat. The 737 Max remains grounded worldwide following two fatal crashes that took 346 lives.

The article indicates that they don't even know if the pilot tried to lower the landing gear to begin with.

One important thing in defense of Boeing. Different nations have different maintenance and safety standards. So hopefully this bodes better for jets that fly American domestic routes. Including the 737 and the 787.

There have been 26 incidents of a cracked windshield for Boeing 787. Eventually, a cracked windshield will cause a crash if the problems are not discovered and fixed. Broken windshields have been occurring in Boeing 787 since at least 2014 and the problem is still not fixed.

I am making not excuses for Boeing. You live off the quotas as a promotion and you die off the quotas with the reduction of excellence. It is bad enough that they have a corrupted contract with the federal and other governments with cost overruns the norm. Military, science and private technology advances have slowed down. The taxpayer gets ripped off big time. And they have several projects that are having issues getting the bugs out of them even now.

It's DWA, so anything is possible. Look what happened at SFO a few years ago.

Boeing showed they were willing to put profits over safety so now ever single incident will become magnified.

It would appear that way. Not because they do not have the talent but because they have greedy bastards running things. Engineers told them the 737 fix was not an easy software fix like the money people wanted and it would appear it is not but they still insist on believing it will.

Flight data recorder will show whether or not the pilots deployed the landing gear and subsequently got a display indicating they’re down and locked. Also, the pilots would be heard on the cockpit voice recorder calling out landing gear deployment, flaps, and other stuff on their landing checklist.

Could be they got displays the gear was down when it really wasn’t, which would obviously point to some sort of malfunction.

They also wouldn’t have been the first nor last flight crew to somehow miss their gear deployment during the landing checklist. It happens.

Just watched an Air Disasters episode that concluded the very experienced Captain and First Officer of a NW flight departing Detroit back in the 80s failed to deploy wing flaps and slats during their preflight checklist. Flaps and slats provide much needed lift and without them deployed the plane crashed on takeoff killing all but one I think it was. All pilots know how crucial flaps and slats and locked landing gear are to getting a plane safely off the ground and back down again, yet they still on occasion make deadly mistakes.

There have been 26 incidents of a cracked windshield for Boeing 787. Eventually, a cracked windshield will cause a crash if the problems are not discovered and fixed. Broken windshields have been occurring in Boeing 787 since at least 2014 and the problem is still not fixed.

Did you also google to see that Vietnam Airlines only started flying this plane a few weeks ago?

Oh but it couldn't be pilot error......that would be too errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr not anti-Americanism for you.

The first response from Boeing is always pilot error. They were proved wrong in the 737 Max crashes.

The DWA pilots forgot to put the landing gear down.
