Allegedly, Riggs did this to pay off $100,000 in gambling debts.

He decisively beat Margaret Court a few months earlier. Court was ranked higher than Billie Jean King.

It was a classic suckers bet.

Riggs destroyed Court and then layed down against Billy Jean. I am not surprise he would have tanked for the payout
