I just put myself away from a major city, because when the mushrooms start to sprout you can avoid the fallout by
1. Not being under the bomb.
2. Not being east of the cloud because of the jet stream.
3. Have plenty of ammunition and clean water and food, because hell is going to break out, and it will be like New Orleans after the Hurricane.

A fallout shelter is nice, but if you are under the blast, you cant dig deep enough to survive one.
