Bill to extend unemployment AGAIN killed by senate republicans

What say you?

It's the policy with the single most upside in terms of job creation potential.

Are you attempting to put fourth that increasing unemployment bennies creates jobs :wtf:

Stop paying people to get unhealthy & burden the system sitting on the couch collecting unemployment. Pay people to to build infrastructure.

So I pay $10,000 a year in federal taxes and $3000 in state taxes for 35 years and I get laid off and you want me to do work and jump through hoops to get a measly 3-5% back of what I paid for years?

It's crap like this why people don't trust anything politicians tell them. The people who work for years lining these politicians pockets, putting up with tons of regulation and garbage just to try and live life get shit on the most...

Is drawing a paycheck for 2 YEARS screwing you?

That is the sad truth and if we continually push the benefits out there is no reason for people to look for work.

What say you?

The government finds ways to screw everyone. The unemployment system itself encourages unemployment. But people also pay into it for years and and then when they want some of their money back they get hosed...

yep its ridiculous. they should just let us keep the money in the first place

i just find it hilarious that every since jan 2008 the gop started caring about the decifit and never did before then. I wonder what happened in that time frame

Ohh well the govt can pay by extending the unemployment benefits or pay thru the costs of trying and incarcerating more thieves.

Of course not all those who stop getting benefits will turn to thievery, not too many actually but one thief out of 100 who stop getting benefits would likely still be more expensive to the govt.

Umm Palin lost? Who is just coincidentally getting paid for appearances at TP events....

btw if the govt cuts off unemployment benefits they will pay in other ways.

In KY a married couple does not qualify for food stamps or several other benefits if one of them is drawing max unemployment.

Cut off unemployment, in comes Food stamps. Medicaid? etc....

Paying someone with idle time may make them drink alcohol, do drugs, get fat & burden healthcare, or rob people also.

Paying them to work benefits everyone.

Well Duhh captain obvious.

Forget the unemployment figures and recession?

Let them eat cake?

All the global civilized nations of the planet did Stimulus Left, as opposed to Ivy-League Do Nothing Smart, Right!! Public Works spending was not created from the Lazy and Shiftless. . . .Ivy League Stimulus! Kiss My poster got it Socialist(?)!

"Paying people not to work is not good for the country & is not stimulus. FDR's WPA was even better than paying someone to get fat & unproductive sitting on the couch all day. It will be hell getting someone to work again after sitting around for 2 years. Extending unemployment is the absolute worst thing to do. We need windmills, oil, water, & carbon pipelines, sewer & water treatment plants, electric grid, solar, insulation, & old buildings torn down. The Obamacrats have their head way up their ass on this one."

Even Afghanistan knows that what comes of Betrayus, is "Obombus, Please!" Reagan-Bush-Bush policy is like that. Betrayus, Obombus, is what they believe the world wants now! Senator McCain even supports Betrayus, Obombus, since he thinks that they do not intend to withdraw from Afghanistan.

Supporting Kabul, or Sacramento, or Salem, OR, or any of the U. S. state government employees, and the local government teachers: Doesn't Help! It hasn't worked, even so far. State and local governments rely on a tax base, generated from a working economy. Public Works projects create employment, source of the tax base. The Ivy League got it wrong!

Any economy wherein the rich get richer, and the poor get poorer--like in state and local government employment, and in Social Security, and in savings interest, or in stock earnings and their dividends: Doesn't work. Fixed percentage pay raises do not work!

Public works programs in support of the remedy work. A refundable income tax credit works, like an equal-amount, national COLA: Works. The equal-dollar Cash-for-Clunkers worked. The equal dollar home-buyers Stimulus Worked.

The Republicans said. "No!" The Party of Lincoln offered decades of misery, instead! Nothing, instead, was in fact to be done!

"Crow, James Crow: Shaken, Not Stirred!"
(Black Clergy, even, offered Nappy-Headed Ho's on Basketball courts, instead of aid to Blacks in Haiti, or in Kenya! Racial Bigots are where anyone can spot them, like in the Federal Birthday calendar(?)!)

Without looking into it too much I am on board with letting it die. If we do this yet again, when will it cease? Many people stop looking for work after they begin to draw until the benefits are coming close to an end. That is the sad truth and if we continually push the benefits out there is no reason for people to look for work.

I seriously doubt it.

My son made about $5000 a month and was laid off. He supports a wife and 3 kids. His employment is about $1600/month which just barely covers the cost of insurance. That leaves a mortgage to pay plus all the expenses of supporting a family. To think that he would stop looking for a job is ridiculous.

Unemployment compensation is not welfare. It is funded from unemployment insurance paid by the employer to the state. Unemployment is only paid to those who are actively seeking a job. It is only paid for a limited number of months. When unemployment reaches high levels Congress usually extends the payments.

What say you?

I am informed that there are currently 9.3 million people receiving unemployment benefits.

Are there 9.3 million jobs out there for them?

No, of course not.

The FREE TRAITORS allowed those jobs to go to the third world.

Hope ya'll enjoyed your cheap imports.

That's all about to change.

Now imports will begin to get more expensive but fewer and fewer Americans will be able to purchase it since fewer or us will have jobs.

And as your municipalities go broke because fewer and fewer of us can pay taxes, the quality of our lives -- even if we still lucky enough to have jobs -- will decline.

Any of you guys know anything about what happened to Argentina in the last 30 years?

Well it might behoove you to see what that nation went through cause the USA is about to undergo a rather similar fate.

I don't believe this. Most people collecting unemployment would much rather have a job. And right now the jobs aren't there. Better to extend it than have more people go belly up.

Of course. That's the entire rationale for having automatic stabilizers like unemployment insurance that kick in during economic downturns. From that CBO report:

Extending additional unemployment benefits would directly help those who would otherwise exhaust their unemployment benefits between March and December of this year. Households receiving unemployment benefits tend to spend the additional benefits quickly, making this option both timely and cost-effective in spurring economic activity and employment. A variant of this option would extend assistance with paying health insurance premiums, which would allow some recipients to maintain health insurance coverage they would otherwise have dropped. This variant would result in increased demand for health care services, and it would increase the income available to purchase other goods and services for recipients who would have purchased insurance even without this special assistance. Both policy options could dampen people’s efforts to look for work, although that concern is less of a factor when employment opportunities are expected to be limited for some time.

CBO estimates that the policies would raise output cumulatively between 2010 and 2015 by $0.70 to $1.90 per dollar of total budgetary cost. CBO also estimates that the policies would add 8 to 19 cumulative years of full-time-equivalent employment in 2010 and 2011 per million dollars of total budgetary cost.

Economies are based on people buying good and services. For example, that's why deficit spending on food stamps during downturns has similar effects to unemployment compensation and for a similar reason. Empirical data shows that every additional $5 spent on them--through emergency spending--spurs up to $9.20 in economic activity. Moreover, as Hanson and Golan conclude in that brief:

Ultimately, whether growth in the Food Stamp Program stimulates economic activity depends on the funding mechanism—emergency financing stimulates economic activity in a recession, while budget-neutral financing does not. However, in either scenario, the increase in FSP expenditures raises the budgets of food stamp recipient households, stabilizing recipients’ food consumption and their well-being during economic downturns. Both scenarios also result in increased demand and production in the agriculture and food sectors, stabilizing economic activities in these key rural sectors during downturns in the economy.

That's why the stimulus (emergency funding) contained a large amount of money for food stamps:

Today, USDA Under Secretary Kevin Concannon marked the one year anniversary of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (AARA) of 2009, also known as the stimulus or recovery package, by announcing that ARRA invested more than $8 billion in local economies to feed the hungry through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly the Food Stamp Program with approximately $830 million more invested each month. In addition, through the Emergency Food Assistance program, States received an additional $150 million to support local food banks, food pantries and soup kitchens.

There really are reasons that programs like these have been extended during this recession.

I dont wish it on anyone but if you happen to need the government to pay you unemployment (after years of paying for it yourself) .....well, good luck and or refuse it since you hate all this "spending". Take a stand and refuse the money literally owed to you.

I have never taken a dime of government unemployment, welfare, healthcare, foodstamps, or housing. This is not something you take for yourself you idiot. You talk like an ignorant welfare queen.

By Welfare, do you mean retired navy? I guess technically, I took goverment money for 20 years and now I am taking government money for my retirement.

Is that the definition of a welfare queen in your opinion?

Right now, I am working on career number two and if for some reason the business I am in goes under, I will immediatly apply for unemployment until I get another job, since I pay for unemployment insurance.

Between these two scenerio's, should I feel bad or guilty about something?

If you lose an arm in an accident, will you use medical insurance to pay for it? Same principle as unemployment insurance. You pay for it and hope you never need it.

GET IT?

I am blessed to have a full time job that has excellent benefits and a decent wage. What I refuse to do is be a complete dick to my family and friends who paid into the system for decades and just want a small share of their taxes back when the government destroyed their job with high taxes and regulations.

I am talking about employing these unemployed & not being a dick saying tough shit. People like Zona always think they are owed something.
the money literally owed to you.
Stop paying people to get unhealthy & burden the system sitting on the couch collecting unemployment. Pay people to to build infrastructure. This will create even more jobs supporting these workers. Building a renewable energy infrastructure will eliminate our entire trade deficit.

Again, I am recieving retirement pay for 20 years of the Navy. Should I also feel guilty about the fact that 35% of my retirement pay is not taxed because I am technically considered disabled? Should I refuse it? Should I refuse the retirement pay all together?

I feel as though I am owed something? Fair statement I guess.

When I said something about money owed you....I meant, if you pay for unemployment benifits for years, and ARE SUDDENLY UNEMPLOYED, you should be paid. You paid for it, you deserve to get it.

Still dont get it?

I need to ask you something Zona. Do you have a clue who pays for unemployment? Exactly when did you pay for unemployment benefits?

They would rather you lose your home than receive unemployment benefits YOU paid for. I don't understand these people. They think they would rather collect a paltry payment than work and get paid what they were used too? What kind of logic is that?

Right now, its hard (depending on where you live of course) to find employment. The jobs just are not there. They quote the unemployment numbers when they are trying to make the president look bad, but say to these guys, go find a job. ???

They think a person who is trying to find a job but cant is automatically a "welfare queen" and that is just wrong.

Please answer me. You made a claim that people should get back for what they pay for. Exactly what was taken out of your paycheck in the past, or anyone's paycheck for that matter, that was considered "paying for unemployment benefits".

Do you know who actually pays for the benefits?
