But he is infringing on her rights. So if she gets sick, her wife is treated like a friend, not a spouse. And they don't get social security and medicare benefits that straight people do.

This is just like the birth control issue. The Catholic Church doesn't need to offer birth control, but the insurance companies do. And the Catholic church doesn't have to recognize gay marriage, but the state does.
