“Let there be no question, Donald Trump and his MAGA Republicans are determined to destroy American democracy,” he said, referring to the former president’s slogan, “Make America Great Again.” “And I will always defend, protect and fight for our democracy.”
Biden also accused Trump and his allies of bowing down to authoritarians: “I will not side with dictators like Putin. Maybe Trump and his MAGA friends can bow down but I won’t.”

Trump IS a danger to US democracy. He's not the only one, but he's pushing the very fragile democracy towards something else.
He's changed how people view the presidency.
Before Trump, presidents were "presidential" to a certain extent. Dubya got criticized for being a bit thick, perhaps not because he's stupid but because he's was less "presidential" than others, but still played the part.
Obama was very good at it, Clinton played the part, even though he got caught with girlies. Bush senior was very Presidential, and Nixon was one who maybe was less so, but compared to Trump.....
What's the future? People realize that they can become president by being wacky, that's not good for US democracy at all. Others that they can get away with a lot of stuff. You end up with a crazy or a power hungry maniac and US democracy could become a dictatorship.

And having been founded as a federalist republic? The Federalists won the day. The US moved on from a Confederation.
