Basic Income may become a vital necessity in the near future due to possible rise of what Keynes called technological unemployment. In October the Swiss will have referendum on UBI (Universal Basic Income). The EU recently had a petition on it. And the state of Alaska has something called the Alaska Permanent Fund.

Here's a 60 Minutes report that could illustrate why Basic Income might be a good idea:

Cool. I resign. When do I get my first check?

Just so you understand, Basic Income would remain at a low fixed rate. So if you're satisfied with that fine, as that income will eventually recirculate into the economy anyway.

But if want or need more for whatever home project or endeavor you are interested in, you could find a job, or maybe even create one, and add that additional income to your Basic Income level.

It is a good idea and it has supporters on both sides of the aisle. Capeesh?

It's a bogus idea intended to keep enough people subservient to the state in order to ensure ever-expanding government power.

Fuggedaboutit.

We humans need to be careful with making better and better technology. At some point artificial intelligent machines may take over the world and decide that humans are not needed.

With the bare essentials that are required for a human to survive covered I think we would find people pursuing their actual interests and talents which would be a net benefit for society.

Would everyone get this guaranteed income regardless of other income sources?

I find the idea intriguing. Even as a libertarian it's not something I would dismiss outright, but I'd like to see a lot more supporting evidence to show that it would be beneficial as supporters are claiming. Generally, if you give people a reason not to produce or excel, most of them won't.

My understanding is that it would be similar to everyone just getting a "Social Security" type check in the mail every month.

Jesus, didn't they try that:
(1) USSR,= fail,
(2) North Korea = fail. Heck the best controlled economic experiment in history was on the Korean Peninsula. Same people, same historuy, same culture, same geography and same well everything but government. NK run by communist socialists and South Korea run by capitalists. NK is one of the poorest countries in the world. They produce nothing, have a piss poor GDP and have yearly famine epidemics. SK has grown into a major economic power. They are on the cusp of being a developed nation. They are on the 12 largest economy in the world. The you have NK, they are a bottom feeder competing with African nations at the bottom. They are the 125 largest economy in the world.
(3) Cuba = Fail
(4) Nicaragua - Fail
(5) Cambodia = Fail
(6) China only turned it around when they opened up to capitalism, foreign investment and private property and enterprise.
(7) Venezuela = despite their oil money = Fail

No, they did not.

I have absolutely no problem with $50,000 a year for all unemployed Americans guaranteed.
Financing it will not be a problem. We raise taxes, Starting with all unemployed people having a 100% tax rate.
