Oh I wouldn't say that it was a "bad year for liberals...
....regardless of the fact the there ARE folks who view the armed murderer of an unarmed kid and a Machiavellian KGB killer as heros...or the ensuring the health coverage of over 6,000,000 previously uninsured Americans in just 4 months as a "bad thing"...or our prez effectively rallying Allies to sanction that behemoth Russia for its hegemony "weak and feckless"...
Overall...I'd say it was a Much better year for progressives and liberals than for authoritarian conservative types who have done nothing but bitch, bitch, bitch...
