Three years ago, the Army rolled its tanks out of Europe after decades of post-World War II and Cold War presence. But that didnā€™t last long.

As the last M1 Abrams tanks and Bradley Fighting Vehicles shipped out, Russia annexed the Crimea region of neighboring Ukraine and stepped up its aggression in the Black Sea, routinely flying fighter jets low over U.S. ships.

ā€œSince the fall of the Berlin Wall, we have enjoyed a respite from worrying about the basic security of the European order,ā€ David Shlapak, an international security analyst at the RAND Corp., told lawmakers in a March 2 House Armed Services Committee hearing. ā€œThat respite, ladies and gentlemen, is over.ā€

So after drawing down 10,000 soldiers and closing posts in places like Bamberg and Heidelberg, the Army is stepping up its game ā€” again ā€” in Europe.
ā€œThis is about the United Statesā€™ contribution to NATOā€™s decision to transition from assurance to deterrence,ā€ U.S. Army Europe commander Lt. Gen. Ben Hodges told Army Times.

Hundreds of British troops, tanks and heavy armour are sent to Russiaā€™s border in the biggest show of force against Moscow since the Cold War
  • A group of 120 soldiers arrived in Estonia, and 300 vehicles will arrive next week
  • The eastern European country, who thinks Russia is a threat, asked for the help
  • Sir Michael Fallon said the soldiers are 'standing up to Russian aggression'

Russia has always viewed Crimea as an area of geopolitical interests. And Russia called the Crimea Ukrainian, only on condition of guarantees of its military base.
