The real problem is brainwashing promoted by the MSM.

They have been fed this line of BS that Republicans are old white men; dying off very soon; the country is turning liberal every day; Socialism is the future for this country.

In the minds of liberals, the country is just like them--liberal. All their family members are liberal, their coworkers are liberal, their associates at Starbucks are liberal, so certainly most people in the country must be liberal.

Yes, there are conservatives around. They hang around on their yachts, maybe riding around in pickup trucks with a gun rack on the back, but those people are the minority.

So when Republicans win, something must have gone terribly wrong. How can a country which is mostly liberal lose a presidential election? It simply isn't possible!

To appease their constituents, liberal politicians and MSM convince them they got screwed. Their calculations were accurate; there is no way Republicans can win the presidency. The Democrats actually won, it's just they got cheated somehow.
