First, is preventing US citizens (free people supposedly) from travelling abroad obstensibly to join up with some terrorist group to fight in some foreign country even legal? How is that any different than private military contractors? Is it a designation thing? If the group's a "terrorist group" that makes it illegal as opposed to a private company doing "security" (wink wink) work somewhere?

Secondly, isn't it tactically better to allow such people to join those groups where we can then kill them along with the others? Keep them here and wont their desire to fight or be martyred just express itself here instead of over there? Plus if they're kept here best we can do is stick em in a dark hole somewhere for a while.

Thirdly, instead of addressing this emerging problem via law enforcement, get some Muslim feds involved to try turning them from jihad to pro-US efforts. Obviously they know how to contact these kinds of people. And presumedly they're some kind of disaffected sort looking for purpose and easily lured into extremism. So wouldn't a more positive Muslim role model encouraging them to assist the government against terrorists not be so difficult? They were recruited for one thing, isn't turning them into more productive Muslims even easier?

Never going to win this thing through force-of-arms. Only way to effect lasting change is to win hearts and minds. But extremist-inclined Muslims aren't going to listen to non-Muslims, but they might be susceptible to coaxing from other Muslims. Control the message these young eager minds are absorbing and in time you'll marginalize the violent factions to the extent they really are the minority. As it stands, if the only hardcore religious types are the ones commiting terroristic acts, and everyone else is a limpdick fair weather sorta Muslim, the ones eager to be devout will gravitate to the terrorist types since there's no one else around.

They shouldn't be arrested, they should be killed
