An armed standoff in Texas ended with the suspect being taken into custody and here is the kicker, for once the baddie wasn't shot full of holes or tased to near death. The police showed restraint, and patience and ended the standoff with negotiation. Best of all, this took place in Texas, where it is well known the police are forgiven just about any abuse or excessive enthusiasm when taking the suspect into custody. It appears that the boys in blue the thin blue line deserves some kudos for this demonstration of professionalism and restraint.

Of course, there is a kicker. The little fact that is sort of vital to understanding the complete situation. But let's get to the story.

Police were called by the wife of the suspect. He fired his weapon during a domestic disturbance. The police arrived, and the man who was armed, and had fired his weapon left taking the police on a chase as he eluded capture. He returned to his home, with the police in pursuit. They did not shoot the armed man as he left his car. They did not run him over, or any of the other "completely justified actions" that have been used and excused just in the last few months. This restraint is kind of nice to see, and is easily explained when you know who the suspect is.

Then an armed standoff started. The suspect was holed up inside his house, waiting and refusing to come out. The Police didn't throw grenades in the home.

They canceled school because the house where this was taking place was very close to the school grounds and they had to protect the children. So the baddie was so dangerous that they had to cancel a day of school to protect the children.

But they took him into custody. Finally. Peacefully.

UPDATE: Normangee Police Chief released from jail after posting bond.

He was released on $8,500 bond. They called the negotiations to get the armed man outside to be arrested, well when it's a cop it's totally a different thing. When it's a cop who is holed up in his house armed and holding other cops at bay then it is not an armored standoff. It's just that the police are 'visiting" the cop. Seriously.

Around 5:30 a.m., law enforcement was informed that Herford had made his way back to his home on 4th Street.

DPS Trooper Jimmy Morgan says after "visiting" with the sheriff's office and Texas Rangers until 7 a.m., Herford decided to turn himself in.

The Texas Rangers, DPS, Normangee Police, Leon County Sheriff's Office and Madisonville Police Department were all on scene.

Now, if this hadn't been a cop, reading of the charges would have taken hours. They would have slapped on use of a weapon during the commission of a felony. Resisting arrest, refusing to obey an officers legal command. Bail would have started at a million, and gone up as the DA outlined how heinous the crimes were and how dangerous the baddie was. But it's the chief of police, not just a cop, but a high ranking cop.

The charges he faces, basically nothing. Just minor little things, no felonies. I'm sure the DA is right now working a deal to get the charges down to disturbing the peace so the Chief can once again protect the community or some such shit.

The situation was so dangerous that they closed the school for the day, and he's out on $8,500 bond.

A white guy shoots a US Congresswoman, a kid and a judge in Arizona. Taken alive. Jared Loughner.
A black woman refused to put her cigarette out on a traffic stop in Texas and wound up dead. Sandra Bland.

Nothing new except the wrinkle he was a cop.

Like the FBI, I have a great respect for Texas, Texans, their way of life and the police they employ.

No need to go further, just a great job by good, liberty loving Americans.

Loughner was subdued by civilian bystanders. If the police had taken them a number of those bystanders would have been shot by trigger happy cops. Shooting bystanders is frowned upon but not really discouraged by punishing the cops you know.

I also have respect for Texas and Texans. Our agreement stops there.
