Laws banning incest between brothers and sisters in Germany could be scrapped after a government ethics committee said the they were an unacceptable intrusion into the right to sexual self-determination.

“Criminal law is not the appropriate means to preserve a social taboo,” the German Ethics Council said in a statement. “The fundamental right of adult siblings to sexual self-determination is to be weighed more heavily than the abstract idea of protection of the family.”​

Been incest law repeal talk in Germany for quite a while now. Was some story years ago about a brother and sister raised apart, never knew each other until they met coming to take care of their mom or dad, fell in love, and had a few kids.

As a strictly legal question, I'm not sure it benefits society enough to forbid such unions. Only real question being are the associated health defects in offspring so regular and severe so as to constitute something the state has a right to forbid and prevent?

US law allows some incestuous unions as in Rhode Island which allows for uncle-niece, and first-cousins.

Aside from marriage, legal-aged sex whether incestuous or not should be legal. Courts and police are overworked already without adding another thing to their plates. Who cares who has sex with, or marries whom? Maybe if those that do were having more sex, they'd be concerning themselves less with those having enough sex?
