Sex abuse was covered up at cadet forces, Panorama finds - BBC News

This time its the Cadets that have been exposed. Usual story. abuse, cover ups and so on.
So schools, sports clubs, churches and childrens homes have all had to deal with this problem.

Its not just a British problem. I think the only countries who have not had this exposed are just in denial.

Is this a modern issue ?

When I was a child we were not to talk to strangers and that was about it. But it seems it was going on everywhere in the 60s.

My personal view is that child abuse has been going on for centuries but it is only now that victims are confident enough to come forward.

Whats the answer ?

I am not joking when I talk about the random wheel of sentencing. Give pedofiles a 1 in 10 chance of scoring the death sentence. At the very least it will cut down on repeat offenders.

I think it has always gone on- but kids have been too scared and shamed to report it.

Even now kids are not always taken seriously.

I believe the Boy Scouts have addressed this by requiring at least two adults be present at all times, so that you don't have men alone with boys or girls. I think as parents this should be considered basic child safety- the big danger is not from strangers, but leaving your kids alone with a man.

It's not a temporally driven issue. It's a culturally and individually inspired one. The things that define sexual abuse vary by culture and individuals' personal sense of morals and ethics. When the culture and the individuals who live in it exists has little to do with it.

I think that there is greater awareness of the problem alongside a shift in the attitude of society towards this.

Back in the Victorian era one of the biggest employers was child prostitution where children saw to the needs of what must have been thousands of paedos.

And that age is often held up as a beacon for civilised behaviour.

So maybe the situation is better now rather than worse ?

Pornography is far more prevalent and easy to get, for one, and this warps social relationships, especially in heavily urbanized areas where alienation and isolation magnify many mental illnesses and makes people more 'tolerant', another euphemism for jaded and sociopathic.

When it happens to boys, they're more likely to be taken seriously.

Abuse survivors make poor witnesses. So many abused kids end up drug addicted or working as prostitutes as a result of the abuse, it's easy to poke holes in their stories. If the abuser is a successful coach, minister, 20 year Boy Scout volunteer, who gets believed? Certainly not the underaged heroin addicted hooker.

The answer is that Britain, especially Wales, has a long respected history of pederasty in public school, particularly the residential ones. Or have you forgotten? How much extended therapy to do that?
