Syria crisis: Kofi Annan quits as UN-Arab League envoy

The UN-Arab League joint special envoy to Syria, Kofi Annan has announced he is leaving his post.

In a news conference, he said the Syrian people "desperately need action" but criticised the UN Security Council for "finger-pointing and name-calling".

Mr Annan authored a six-point peace plan for Syria which was intended to bring an end to the fighting.

But the plan was never fully adhered to by either side and the violence has continued to escalate.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said it was "with deep regret" that he announced Mr Annan would not renew his mandate when it expires at the end of August.

The Syrian foreign ministry also expressed regret at the announcement, state TV reported.

Speaking in Geneva, Mr Annan said the increasing militarisation of the Syrian conflict and the "clear lack of unity" in the Security Council had "fundamentally changed the circumstances for the effective exercise of my role".

He said the problems were "compounded by the disunity of the international community".

"compounded by the disunity of the international community".

Love that quote----did he think he was being called in because everyone loved each other ?

Good luck with getting any help from them in Iran.

Never mind, "civilised community" from UN circus will find another clown to run their errands for them.

Well the vast majority of nations there are either dictatorships or corrupt authoritarian democracies.

Priceless - now I've seen it all. UN voting to condemn its own Security Council for being a waste of space.
Syria crisis: Fighting rages ahead of UN Assembly vote

There has been renewed fighting in Syria ahead of a UN General Assembly vote condemning its own Security Council for failing to end the unrest.

The army has been shelling rebel positions in the largest city, Aleppo. There was also bloodshed in Hama and the capital, Damascus.

The aim of the UN resolution is to pressure the Security Council to act.

Remind anyone of anything?

"From a practical point of view Annan's leave carries no consequences. The paradox is that the main bloody events unfolded in Syria thanks to active peacemaking efforts of a former UN Secretary-General. Show Assad resoluteness and decline Annan's dubious services last winter, there would have been lot less victims. ..... But Assad is soft if you can put it like that. It is difficult for the East to understand the Bible notion about turning the other cheek. There a blow must be answered with a blow - and attempts to appeal to the peacefulness of the attacker causes either scorn or bewilderment. ........

By itself Annan's leave does not promise anything serious - worse than he had done, he will not be able to do. Slowly Assad begins to snarl back and ignore pretences of "peaceful global community". Not actively enough though - and perhaps eventually it will finish his regime better then any open aggression.

.............

Six months ago there were absolutely no prerequisites for the occurrence of a civil war in Syria. Secular country, the younger generation that lived 30 years in the present - though disturbing - world is extremely tolerant by Eastern society's standards ... In general, the division on religious and ethnic grounds in Syria could have been imagined only in a very feverish imagination.

However, it should be recognized that the Wahhabi monarchies of the Gulf were able to ensure that the split begins to emerge clearly - and not only in the minds but at the household everyday level. Bloodshed which came into Syria inevitably degrades people's minds and perceptions throwing them back to archaic level; simplifies it; reduces everything to a system of identification: friend or foe. And in this case, the archaic inevitably wins - recognition complex schemes no longer work. It's simple - either you will kill, or someone will kill you -- War.

In this sense, Kofi Annan, brilliantly fulfilled his part of the work - its peacekeeping allowed the militants to recover from the defeat which they suffered at the end of winter. Gave them a break. We in Russia went through this during the first Chechen war. But Assad does not have a large territory. He has nowhere to retreat ... And the consequences of peacekeeping initiatives proved so disastrous.

................

Syria is a cornerstone of the Middle East. Pluck it out - and the whole design will inevitably collapse. It is and about geo-strategic position of Syria, and its key role in the system of deterrence and containment - first of all with regard to the Palestinian issue and the Lebanese situation. Therefore, by destabilising Syria Annan completed his work, he could not have done more then that. And he left.

Him going is likely to be a prologue to the elimination of the UN observer mission - albeit useless structures, it is still provides some restrain; sluggish but still monitors something. Now there is no need for it any more - it's time for a complete and total mayhem.

There is a great chance that from the moment of Annan leaving - literally the end of August - September - the situation will collapse despite all the heroism of the Syrian army, all the attempts by Russia, China and Iran to somehow stop it.

..................

If in place of Bashar there was his brother Maher (who really should not be allowed to power in peacetime), perhaps he would have drowned the country in blood, but saved it from complete collapse and disintegration and even greater blood. But Bashar does not demonstrate such ability and such a desire. He wants to compromise. It is possible that even now there is still a chance to suppress the rebellion - but a thread is too tightly strung...

...it seems that next month will be crucial. And Annan's departure which looks like a flight from the scene of a crime only reinforces this idea...."

My point was about the ineffectiveness of the UN. Maybe I should have said it twice.

He have done a lot! He stopped Assad from finishing off international gangs of "freedom fighters", giving them much needed time for recuperation. If not for Annan's efforts, bloodshed in Syria would've ended in winter.
