Ann Coulter speech in Ottawa cancelled due to fears of violence

I read the story and don't understand why she was afraid. A bunch of vocal Canadian students intimidated her? Puh-lease.

And her point about free speech is ridiculous. The ones in this story that DO have freedom of speech are the students, not her.

Coulter cancelled you dummass.

I missed this, Ravi believes conservatives do not have the same rights as liberal/marxist
:cuckoo: The students are Canadians and thus have free speech rights. Coulter is a guest, so not so much.

Asshole.

I believe ravi's point is the students are canadian citizens and coulter is not.

She was afraid to go inside so it's her own fault that she didn't speak.

Then she said what she really thought of the student protesters who surrounded Marion Hall, making it to unsafe, in the view of her bodyguard, for the pundit to attempt entry.

 Maybe she was channeling Pubic, who believes neg rep is an act of violence.

Ann Coulter cuts and runs from Canadian students.

How funny is that?

This was a calculated move on her part. Like other examples of fake persecution by extremists she wants to be seen as a martyr because her shock value has worn off and she needs attention.

She "cut and ran" because they were threatening.

I find it revealing that the same dems who don't have a problem with the Senate pushing a life-changing bill upon us despite the protests of the people, also have no problem with mobs intimidating the people they don't agree with.

And Ravi, THE POLICE CANCELLED IT.

No, they didn't, Ravi.

"An angry mob and skittish police shut down a speech she was to give at the University of Ottawa.

An appearance by Ann Coulter has a tendency to cause anger and outrage. On one American college campus, Coulter was attacked by a pie throwing anarchist. But never before has any speech by her been canceled by mob violence. Sticks and rocks were thrown. A fire alarm was pulled."

CBC News - Ottawa - Coulter 'welcome' at University of Ottawa
..
Organizers of the Coulter event told university security staff at 7:50 p.m. that they would be cancelling the speech by Coulter, an American known for her controversial right-wing views. The International Free Press Society Canada cited fears for Coulter's well-being and claimed 2,000 protesters were gathered outside the university's Marion Hall, where she was supposed to speak.

Following Tuesday's incident, Coulter told reporters the University of Ottawa was a "bush-league university" and again indicated she was unhappy with a note she had received from the university's provost, François Houle, prior to her appearance. The letter mentioned the Charter of Rights and Canada's free speech laws and invited Coulter to "educate yourself, if need be, as to what is acceptable in Canada." Coulter earlier said she took that as a threat to "criminally prosecute" her.

The university disputed the organizers' version of events, saying that about 1,000 people had "peacefully gathered" at the time of the cancellation.

CBC's Hannah Thibedeau, who was at the university Tuesday evening, said police gave a similar estimate for the size of the crowd, and most of the people there were hoping to see Coulter. Only around 100 to 200 appeared to be protesting.

"It wasn't really threatening, it was more rowdy," she said.

However, some people were upset that organizers appeared to be hand-picking who could enter the hall, which was largely filled by Coulter supporters by the time news media were allowed inside. Organizers said the people they picked had pre-registered. At one point, a fire alarm went off.

Evidently free speech "is defined differently" in Socialist Canada...

OTTAWA — After protesters at the University of Ottawa prevented Ann Coulter from giving a speech Tuesday night, the American conservative writer said it proved the point she came to make — free speech in Canada leaves much to be desired.

Then she said what she really thought of the student protesters who surrounded Marion Hall, making it to unsafe, in the view of her bodyguard, for the pundit to attempt entry.

“The University of Ottawa is really easy to get into, isn’t it?” she said in an interview after the cancelled event. “I never get any trouble at the Ivy League schools. It’s always the bush league schools.”

Coulter said she has been speaking regularly at university campuses for a decade. While she has certainly been heckled, she said this is the first time an engagement has been cancelled because of protesters.

“This has never, ever, ever happened before — even at the stupidest American university,” she said.

Coulter remarked on the reception she has had since entering the country.

“Since I’ve arrived in Canada, I’ve been denounced on the floor of Parliament — which, by the way, is on my bucket list — my posters have been banned, I’ve been accused of committing a crime in a speech that I have not yet given, I was banned by the student council, so welcome to Canada!”

The “accusation” of which Coulter speaks is a reference to an e-mail she received from University of Ottawa vice-president and provost Francois Houle on Friday, warning her that freedom of speech is defined differently in Canada than in the U.S. and that she should take care not to step over the line.

?It?s always the bush league schools,? Ann Coulter contends

I'm certainly no fan of Coulter, but this is disappointing news out of Canada. Every country has slightly different rules as to what they think is acceptable free speech, but this reflects poorly on them. Besides, violence over Coulter? What a waste of energy.

What violence? They protested, she or her handlers feared violence. Nice of them to project their fears as if a violent action took place as an excuse not to confront her detractors.
meanwhile, maybe she should watch her mouth:

Coulter, a best-selling author and syndicated columnist, was in the middle of a three-city tour of Canada, which began at the University of Western Ontario in London on Monday, and ends in Calgary on Thursday.

The event in London went without incident, but not without controversy.

When answering questions from students, Coulter told a 17-year-old Muslim student to "take a camel" instead of the flying carpet she has previously suggested Muslims use for transportation. Coulter later told CTV that the "camel" remark was a joke.

I guess you missed your brain food breakfast eh? That link doesn't say Canada shut it down you dummass. It simply stated the silly excuses given by coulter.

It was the folks on the campus.

Apparantly they don't want to hear someone with a different point of view.

We got about three or four threads going right now about how terrible it is that some folks have threatened Democrats over health care reform. Then we have you rejects over here supporting that very type of activity. Hmm.......

That's odd. Nobody threw bricks through her windows, threatened to assassinate her children (of course you would have to have a uterus for that instead of that ginormous adams apple), cut a line on a propane line to what they thought was her home, posted "RELOAD" advice to a twitter page then direct those twittered to to a website with gun sight logos over all and any of her locations, etc...you know, domestic terrorist acts and advocacy of domestic terrorist acts. But hey, get your panties in a bunch because she felt threatened and try to equate that feeling to actual threats and ACTS of violence. :disbelief:
