Echoes of a Reagan Romance

Katrina and Angela offer hope for a better relationship between the United States and Germany. Katrina, who was no lady, nevertheless prompted the German government to open its strategic oil reserves to the United States, and Angela Merkel, a fast friend of Washington, is on course, maybe, to succeed a spoiler of the German friendship with the United States.

William R. Timken Jr., the new American ambassador to Berlin, received a warm welcome when he arrived to take up his duties last week, delivering a letter from President Bush thanking the German people for their assistance in the wake of the storm that battered our Gulf Coast. Two planes of the Luftwaffe, loaded with food and medical supplies, were dispatched to New Orleans.

Ambassador Timken's reception last week contrasted sharply with the roughing up he got in the German newspapers when his appointment was announced several months ago. Relations between the two governments have been less than warm for a long time. "In a way, the disastrous diversion was heaven sent for Timken," observes der Spiegel, the German newsmagazine. "Many Teutonic eyebrows have been raised by the impression that Timken only got his job by being one of President George W. Bush's many 'Super Rangers,' a somewhat hokey Bushism designating those who have raised at least $300,000 for the Grand Old Party."

More to the point, perhaps, some Germans figured that the new ambassador's company, which makes roller bearings in Ohio, prospers at their expense because of protective tariffs that kept German competitors out of American markets. But the rain that accompanies high winds can soften hard feelings into something like sympathy. Particularly in need of softening was the outburst by Jurgen Trittin, the Green environmental minister who characterized the damage wrought by Katrina as the fault of President Bush. "The American president is closing his eyes to the economic and human costs his land and the world economy are suffering under the natural catastrophes like Katrina and because of neglected environmental policies," he wrote in a German newspaper. Few scientists who study weather, even several passionate decriers of global warning, share Herr Trittin's eccentric science. He might just as well have blamed Prometheus' theft of fire from the heavens for global warming.

on sunday will be elections.

CDU (Merkel) is not doing good.

Their election shares sink. presently they come to 41% of votes.

SPD (Schröder) rises every day. today they are by 35 %. and it is expected Schröder will come to 38 %.

Now it comes to the coalition partners.

CDU will do coalition with FDP (capitalists). FDP is now by 6 %.

so CDU + FDP are presently by 47 % .
They miss the majority.

SPD + Grenn Party also miss the Majority.

Angela Merkel is a looser type.
Before Schröder announced to do early elections, CDU was at 48 - 49 %.
But now where she has to profile herself in the election campaign, faceing Schröder in Shows and Speakings she looses much.

The election campaign in Germany is very exciting and open.
Perhaps there will be a major Coalition between Schröder+ Merkel.
On sunday we will know more.

But election can be decided in 2. October.
Because in Dresden , there died a candidate of Fascist Party (NPD). so for this election constituency in Dresden city, where are over 200.000 election voices, the election will be not this sunday but on 2 . October.

And the East Germans are not that pro - Merkel (CDU) because there have been discriminateing voices in CDU about East Germans.

Everything is open.

But You americans shouldn't think when Merkel gets elected, everything will be fine, Merkel side by side George Bush marching into countries.#

Power to the people, and german People stand fully behind Schröders decisions in PRE-Iraq happenings.

Merkels Newspaper Commentary where in 2003 in Washington, i think Washington Times, where she said, Schröder speaks not for every German in Iraq - Decision is nothing more than Propaganda and asslicking of George Bush.

In Iraq decisions German people stood fully behind Schröder.
German people are grown and educated as pacifist after WW2.
They are not soldiers anymore as in the past.

last night there was again a TV-Show with all Party leaders of every party in germany...

And green Party leader Joschka Fischer said as being Foreign Ministry, that there will come dark times in foreign Policy especially in the Middle East.
He could say so because he know foreign policy. and he said, that Angela Merkel did a fault in PRE-IRAQ. And that she would do again when there come such decisiions.

The elcetion campaign is not that focused much on Jobs and economy anymore as it was weeks ago.

Because CDU does too not focuse on Jobs and economy because they have
a Professor Paul Kirchhof, who shall be Minister of Finance of CDU.

And he hays tax plans with a Flat-Tax, meaning everyone paying the same tax percent.
This is in Germany for german peoples unsocial, and CDU gave this man now a muzzle.

Angela Merkel is not that winner type, they would have become easily major power in Germany, because german peoples are frustrated about job situation. But now CDU is damageing theirselves with presumption and that Paul Kirchhof issue damaged their campaign too.

Sorry to hear that Merkel is not doing too well in the campaign right now, primarily because she is campaigning on the wrong issues. Thanks for the update and foreign perspective.

Schroeder according to the Spiegel has 95% of the Turkish vote
in Germany .

Yes but not because Schröders PRE-IRAQ speches or standings.

They support Scghröder because Schröder is the Guarantee Turkey join EU.
Merkel does not want Turkey in EU.
But when she first arrives in Washington in White House, she will take her orders, and then she will change her attitude against Turkey.

perhaps it is this too.
But, under Schröder, as Turkey's best friend in EUROPE side by side Tony Blair and Silvio Berlusconi, EU-Accession Talks with Turkey will begin on 3rd October.
And without energetic support Schröders being biggest country within EU, Turkey wouldn't have come to this point.
For start of EU-Accession talks only Maastricht-criterias are necessarily...

Turkey fullfills Maastricht criterias, but Turkish-Sceptic Governements in EU want to pack more and more criterias on Maastricht criterias so Turkey stays out of EU.
Merkel is a person who does a game like this to Turkey, besides Chirac and Austria.

Tony Blair and Schröder stopped this. Giving Turkey a fair chance and saying that only Maastricht Criterias are neccassraily as it was like with Poland and other east EU-Members. So schröder+Blair+Berlusconi are friends of Turkey.

When Merkel comes to power she says Turkey has only right for "priviligized Partnership" with EU. Priviligized Partnership is at present realized, with Turkey being Member of various EU-Sub-Organizations and the mutual 1996 EU-Customs Union.

So she is saying nothing more than : "Turkey out of EU, no further approximate between EU and Turkey"....
to gain election votes.

pacta sunt servanda

But of course she says so before the elections. After elections we will see her steadfastness. Because EU-Economic want Turkey in EU.
We will see when Germanys biggest companies will tell Merkel.
Also George Bush will tell her what he thinks.
Tony Blair, EU-Commission and Jose Manuel Baroso told her too.

Her attitude against turkey will change 180 degree after the elections.

Perhaps she is angry too, beacuse Turkey Accession talks will begin on 3rd October, which is also National day of reuniting East-Germany (DDR) and West-Germany.

so there is no reason for German-Turks to vote a party which wants Turkey not beoming member of EU.
In 1963 it was Konrad Adenauer (CDU) giving Turkey the perspective of EU-Membership. Every CDU leader from 1963 emphasized Turkeys EU-Perspective for Turkey. The Last one was Helmut Kohl.

Merkel as current CDU-Leader broke that tradition.
