Indian police seek former Union Carbide chief

NEW DELHI – Indian investigators say they have filed a new court request for the extradition of the former chief of a U.S. chemical company in connection with the 1984 Bhopal gas leak tragedy.

India's Central Bureau of Investigation says it filed an application for a new trial for Warren Anderson, then CEO of Union Carbide Corp., over the disaster in which more than 15,000 people died and hundreds of thousands suffered gas-leak related illnesses.

Bureau spokesman R.K. Gaur said Wednesday that investigators have new evidence and are attempting again to extradite Anderson after the U.S. rejected earlier efforts.

The 90-year-old Anderson was arrested in India after the disaster but left the country while free on bail.

Union Carbide is now owned by Dow Chemical.
