Mass media fails to better serve the public if they do not clearly make it known if what they're publishing or broadcasting are facts or opinions. Facts or opinions should be attributable to credible and/or authoritative sources; it's preferable that those attributions also be generally available and subject to confirmation of many or most of the readers and listeners populations.
Mass media are disserving the public when they pretend or imply their publishing or broadcasting of “alternative facts” are other than gossip and lies; they are not true unless they're labeled as attributable opinions.
