Actually, it wasn't so much political correctness as it was they were trying to cover up a design flaw in one of their safety systems.

And, they didn't release the right radiation amounts because they didn't want to appear as failures to other countries who were successfully using nuclear power.

Yep, I've seen the whole series, and it's pretty good. A very good cautionary tale about what can happen when the government lies to the people.
