Government is the worst solution to any problem. Particularly, the Federal government. Which is why any rational person would want government to solve only those problems for which government is the ONLY solution. Things like national defense, police, civil and criminal courts, roads, recognition of property rights, management of limited resources would be unsolvable without general agreement and recognition. Government is the only solution. Worst = best = only. So yeah, government is rational.

However, for everything else, politicians simply use legitimate needs to drive illegitimate solutions that are designed to advance their own power and remove people's choices. Inevitably, they either don't solve anything or they actually make things worse.

A true liberal who cares about people would recognize this and demand charity be done by themselves. Democrats are authoritarian leftists, they are the polar opposite of a true liberal. A true liberal wants to help the disadvantaged. To a true liberal, if government has any role in charity, it is the last step in the process over people helping themselves, then their family, then their community. And government charity would be as local as possible. All our current government is doing is causing endless dependency and harming producers and the economy in the process.

A fiscal conservative would obviously be happy with less government. But social conservatives should be the same. Government is the worst solution to morality. The war on drugs funds organized crime, terrorizes inner cities and destabilizes government across the world from Columbia to Afghanistan. And we still have the drugs. Abortion laws don't work, but what would work is offering women birth control, sex education and options in addition to the opportunity to teach moral behavior.

A rational person would be most adamant that government stay out of that which is most important to them. Yet both sides do the reverse. And when it fails, they demand more government as the solution. And when that fails they demand yet more.

Let's start being rational.
