Usually, I am the biggest bitch here about this, but let's put it aside now, and let's discuss whether a scientific view can be developed.
Obesity is the most deeply personal development of human life, and thus the primary result of worldwide Americanization, with its most recent and famous casualty, Brazil.
So, how does obesity develop? Obesity, by its dynamics, falls into the category of addiction related deceases. For an obese person, the reason for obesity is usually the people around in the immediate vicinity.
But obesity is an epidemic, and a modern age development, so the answers may be global. Here is my take, I wonder about yours. Modern life is defined usually by its economic productivity. On the personal level, this means the difference between shareholder expectations and related personal achievement for that. (That is achievement minus expectation.) This difference is always negative, otherwise the shareholders leave unutilized production capacity on the table, missing out at parts of their profits.
As a result, a modern person is in a continuous catch up race. The modern person must continuously invest into herself by buying products that speed up her ability to catch up with the shareholder expectations. These products must also reflect her sense of status, which is the outwardly manifestation of aiming at that negative gap above. This means the maximization of personal credit utilization such as mainly in cars and property.
Like an addict, who can't catch up with the continuous negative gap between the demands of her addiction and her personal achievement in servicing that addiction, an obese person can't catch up with the negative gap between the demands of shareholders plus personal credit, and her personal achievement in servicing these two demands.
What kind of solutions are possible to fix this problem? Tell the obese person to forget that every day in school she was told to prepare for a productive life? Tell the obese person something about the people immediately around her? Tell the obese person about her achievements or what she should think she deserves? These trials have already failed nationally, because these are equivalent to trying to fix an addict without trying to change her drugs.
So, is there such a thing as a lost generation? Or an evil generation? Or a generation of poison? We know that there is officially a generation called the Me generation. That generation formulated itself by defining its personal decisions in order to exploit its environment. Is the key to survival for a 21st century generation then a capability to define its personal decisions in order to protect itself from its environment? Is that even feasible?
Discuss.
