1. Seems that there is such a tidal wave of folks rushing to get their children out of the NYC schools....once, the gem of the nation.....that there is a new field, at least in Brooklyn: educational consultants that help parents get their kids into better schools.

2. "Brooklyn Sees Growth in Schools Consultants: Handful of Experts Guide Parents Through Process of Finding Top Schools

3. Between 2000 and 2010, the number of Brooklyn families with children enrolled in school rose by more than 88,000, a 13.8% change, according to U.S. census data. During that time, the number of children in nursery school, pre-K and kindergarten more than doubled, to 86,054.

4. ... the number of elite Brooklyn private schools has remained limited, consultants said. And only 122 Brooklyn public schools out of 490 graded by the city received A's ...

5. "The need in Brooklyn for top school seats has not kept pace with the number of Brooklynites,....

6. Now, a handful of new consultants is sprouting in Brooklyn, joining the borough's long-established doyenne of the business, Joyce Szuflita.

7. .... offer everything from in-depth information on public and private schools to hands-on advice on applications..... offers group workshops (up to $30 a person) and private consultations ($200 an hour)

8. When Ms. Glickman applied to Packer herself in the 1970s, "I don't even remember interviewing," she said. Now, she charges $850 for a 2½-hour introductory session that helps families create a tailored private-schools list and $3,650 for a full admissions consultation, including essay edits, interview prep and unlimited phone and email access."

I've posted this because this is such an important topic.....and nothing to do with the fact that they put my picture in the article....

PC how much of the rise in school enrollment you think is Illegal Aliens kids?

My wife pretty much does this same thing and it appears to me she isn't charging quite enough!

We get kids, mostly from Japan, who run the gamut from the very smart ones looking to get into Elite Schools to complete societal failures.

1. NY is a 'sanctuary city'....and subsequently we have a large population of undocumented alien kids....

...and, it is very attractive to other immigrant populations.

I posted this earlier re: Chinese.....

"5. .... in general, the Sunset Park kids appear on track to achieve the upward mobility that some say is no longer possible in New York’s bifurcated economy. An analysis by New York public radio station WNYC showed that Sunset Park and Borough Park zip codes had among the largest number of acceptances at the city’s specialized, competitive high schools. .... it’s a safe bet that, unlike their parents—not to mention their gender-studies-majoring peers—they won’t be waiting tables."
Brooklyn's Chinese Pioneers by Kay S. Hymowitz, City Journal Spring 2014

6. "So what accounts for the poverty-defying trajectory of the Fujianese kids?
The answer is fourfold.

First is a cultural trait that has become a cliché in the model-minority discussion: a zealous focus on education. .... education for the next generation is close to a religion..... One recent college graduate, now a public school math teacher, told me that his mother would wake him at 5 AM to go over math problems—when he was in the first and second grade. ..
.... one kindergartner’s mother said, in faltering English: “My son must go Harvard.”

a. No matter how poor they are, parents find a way to get their fourth- or fifth-graders into test-prep classes. WNYC found one Sunset Park family who put aside $5,000 for classes for their three sons out of a yearly household income of just $26,000."

The article linked give the rates charged by some of the consultants.

It seems clear those kids won't grow up to be "occupyists" - demanding others pay for what they want ... a lesson tragically missed by the socialists here.

I put the link in google....and after a couple of clicks it opened..

Try it again....the data us pretty detailed.

Kind of separates those who want the best for their kids, from the whiners who just wait for others to do it for them.....

NYC schools were once the gem of the nation? Not so sure about that. But I don't see any reason for them to not suck as bad as most of the public schools in this zombie factory.

My kids were edumacated inside and outside School. I taught them that yer brain don't shut off when the last bell rings at school.. Welcome to early adulthood....

"4. New York’s specialized high schools, including Stuyvesant and the equally storied Bronx High School of Science, along with Brooklyn Technical High School and five smaller schools, have produced 14 Nobel Laureates—more than most countries. For more than 70 years, admission to these schools has been based upon a competitive examination of math, verbal, and logical reasoning skills. "

How much of that is school quality and how much of that is simply population, economic means, better opportunities (IE networking) and genetics? Stats can be misleading.

"Stats can be misleading."

"Don't always believe statistics, they will tell you that the average human has one breast and one testicle."

education is simply what one makes of it. My kids attended public schools that were excellent and they ended up very well prepped for college and they got their degrees...accounting...engineering(2), and medical.... Of their graduating class only 1 went to the military out of 102... 2 didn't go onto further training....a huge huge huge success!

No surprise. The New York City school district is one of the worst performing in the country, yet one of the most expensive.

No surprise. The New York City school district is one of the worst performing in the country, yet one of the most expensive.

And one of the most segregated:

New York is one of the most segregated states for black students. It has the highest rate of black students in high-minority schools and the lowest rate of black exposure to white students.

These phenomena are all tied together. Low performance results from white flight. High expense results from each student needing more resources to achieve proficiency and with fewer offsetting capable students who hardly need any teacher attention. When you have that mix, and the funding that goes with it, then the capable students, in effect, subsidize the troubled students.

Friend...."funding" is a red herring.

It is tied in no way....other than a negative correlation....to student achievement.

Such developments encourage the creation of academic brain teaser game programs to rival modern entertainment industry's fascination with lingo-themed or trivia-themed popular TV game shows.

For example, a sample game would feature the request to enter in antonym pairs of varying degrees of complexity.

Inventiveness in the education field is in many cases equivalent to infrastructure improvements.

The key to the success of the named schools is simply the competitive nature of admissions. With all the pinko's in NYC it is amazing (if true) that these schools have not devolved to a "quota" system where each of the pitiable demographics would be guaranteed a proportionate number of slots in those schools.

And as we all know, competetive tests are all abominations, and don't prove anything.
Right.

That's not really new, but more and more parents are trying to give their children an advantage in an increasingly competitive market.
