50 years ago today, Dr John Fryer testified before the APA, risking his career to tell psychiatry: being gay should not be equated with mental illness

Introduced to the room as Dr. Henry Anonymous, Dr. John Fryer stood in front of a crowd of psychiatrists at their annual meeting donning a garish mask he and his lover had modified.

It has been 50 years since Fryer’s speech, a moment that was central to removing homosexuality from the list of mental disorders, the impact of which contributed to the progression of LGBTQ rights through the next several decades.

By remaining closeted, he told his fellow gay psychiatrists, “we are taking an even bigger risk … in not living fully our humanity, with all of the lessons it has to teach all the other humans around us.”

Though Fryer wouldn’t come out as Dr. Anonymous to the APA for another 20 years, homosexuality as a mental disorder was removed from the DSM in 1973.

Illness is something that has physical symptoms as well as observable physical characteristics. Chicken pox is an illness. Pneumonia is an illness. Homosexuality is simply an abnormal trait; it was never an illness, mental or otherwise.

Homosexuality is and has been in human history since the beginning of time of humanity, so let be clear it is part of humanity and shouldn’t be treated as a mental disorder.

Transsexual and other types of stuff along that nature can be questioned….

So has rape and murder always been around, but no society allows people who do that to remain free and locks them up. Because just like homosexuals their behavior is too detrimental and abnormal to be allowed around normal people..

You can't take that angle.

Schizophrenia, Psychopathy, and Anti-Social disorders of all types have as well.

They are still abnormalities, and disorders.

Homosexuality is as well.

Thing about pedophilia, murder, incest and cannibalism. Those wouldn't be mental disorders (or crimes) if those practicing it also managed to co-opt the laws and re-write them. Ta-da, here we are in 2022! Kinda the point here.

So, the APA based this decision on subjective political intuitions, not so much on OBJECTIVE facts. That being said, just HOW can the APA be considered reliable & trusted authority NOW?

Well the vote was some 3,800 for keeping faggots on the list as mentally ill and 5,800 for removing it, out of a membership of some 20,000, i.e. barely 25% voted to remove it, so we know for a fact it had zero to do with 'science', and everything to do with mau-mauing and political harassment. That works out to 75% or so not being impressed by the 'science' claiming faggots were not mentally ill.

Faggot activists harassed and threatened the membership for over two years to vote 'their way or else', and the members caved to the vermin, so no, they chose to lie to keep from losing money by having their practices harassed.

The persistence of homosexuality - rare as it is - is quite a phenomenon, since they generally don't reproduce. You would think it would fade out.

Here's an interesting question for ya: If Homosexuality had a physical manifestation and could be detected in the womb, would you be OK with aborting a child for that reason?
