2-yr-old girl, mother mauled by pit bull as mother tries to fight with her bare hands

I know so many people who defend pit bulls and say that they are only as mean as their owners taught them to be. That is likely true with most domesticated animals, but pit bulls aren't totally domesticated. Any wild animal, or part wild animal can turn on people, even their owners. I just wouldn't recommend pit bulls for families with children or those live in city limits.

I'm sure pit bulls are quite lovable to most owners, but given that they have that wild streak, it may be best to keep them away from the population and ensure that laws regarding leashes or fences be adhered to. Any dog can attack, if provoked, which is why we have such laws.

Dogs are domesticated. As a matter of fact they were among the first animals to be domesticated. Pits are dogs that were bred to fight other dogs and actually to be more people friendly than most dogs other than golden retrievers. The reason is that the stranger that owned the opposing dog had to be able to handle it to make sure there was no poison on its fur or any other unfair advantage. What is happening is idiots are over breeding them and not culling the unstable ones. People that are not knowledgeable about the amount of damage the breed can do are buying them like they are some breathing fire arm.

When a breed becomes popular, temperment can be the first casulty. German Shepherds, one of my favorites is a case in point sadly :(

This happens so often, and people think it is okay to have pit bulls in a home with children. So sad.

I'm not in favor of firearms. The solution to the problem is to eradicate all pit bulls. Remove them from the planet: they are a menace, especially to children.
.

The dog in the original Little Rascals is a pit. Helen Keller owned one as well. Its the owners/breeders not the dogs. They are an amazing breed of dog.
Problem is one would havea hard time knowing exactly what a previous breeder, within a line bred for.

The latest figure I seen was 323 deaths committed by rifles. How many were actually assault rifles I don't know. But knowing that there 310 million nonmilitary firearms in the country as of 2009 then I would say oyu have a greater chance of being attacked by a dog than shot by a rifle.

In 2011, more murders were committed by knives (1,694), hands, fists and feet (728) and blunt weapons such as clubs and hammers (496), than rifles (323) according to FBI data.

Still makes me wonder why people keep pit bulls as pets. Sounds almost like keeping a rattlesnake, and giving it the run of the neighborhood. I had a boxer, and he caused enough trouble, but he didn't attack or maul anybody. Nor did any other boxers I ever heard of.

But the other thing that occurred to me was... if the mother had had a handgun in her pruse, her daughter probably wouldn't be nearly as torn up now, as she is. But in this incident, the mother apparently had nothing but her bare hands, to fight off the pit bull. She sailed in and fought the dog, of course. But apparently the fight went on and on, until a cop finally arrived and used his weapon to shoot the dog, which ended the fight. Result: Mother injured, daughter BADLY injured. And either or both of them could have been killed, before the cop finally arrived.

If the mother had had a handgun nearby, and had practiced with it, the fight with the dog would have been over a lot sooner, and very likely the injuries would have been a lot less.

Firearms. They aren't just for fighting off bad GUYS. Too bad so many politicians and other leftists think law-abiding people shouldn't have them. If they weren't so hysterical on the subject, maybe that woman's little daughter wouldn't be in a hospital with half her face torn off right now.

League City police shoot dog as it mauls mother and child

By Dale Lezon | March 31, 2014 | Updated: March 31, 2014 10:58am

A mother and her 2-year-old daughter were rushed to the hospital after a dog attacked them at an apartment in League City.

The attack occurred about 8:45 a.m. in the 2800 E. League City Parkway, said Officer Reagan Pena, a spokeswoman for the League City Police Department.

Pena said when officers arrived, a very aggressive pit bull dog was mauling the child and her mother was trying to protect her. An officer was forced to shoot and kill the canine to stop the attack.

Pena said preliminary information indicated the woman was pet-sitting the dog, which belonged to her boyfriend. It was not known what prompted the attack.

Pena said the child was flown by LifeFlight medical helicopter to Memorial Hermann hospital while her mother was taken by ambulance to the same hospital. The girl had severe injuries on her head and face. Her mother had injuries on her arms and hands.

A 4 year old little girl was killed near where I live here in South Louisiana last week by a 130lb pit bull, one of the largest I've ever heard of. She was watching TV with her mother when it attacked her head and neck area out of the blue. She died a horrible death as the mother tried in vain to get the dog to stop. She finally freed her daughter and ran to a bedroom and shut the door and handed the kid through the window to cops outside who finally entered the apartment and killed the dog. There was never any incident in the dogs past that was violent according to family members. The whole community is grieving.

Dog's very seldom attack out of the blue - there are usually warning signs that people ignore or don't recognize :(

It seems often the dog was just fine till it killed somebody.

There are about 78 million dogs in this country, but it's hard to make a comparison when you don't know how many deaths were committed by just assault rifles. I would tend to guess dog attack deaths overall are more rare than gun deaths overall. :dunno:

It's a very rare event that gets played up in the media when it's a pitbul.

People don't pay attention to pet behavior - dogs usually give off a lot of signals and people are idiots.

That's about 1 fatality per 2.5 million dogs.

That's a higher percentage than people killed by so called assault rifles.

But there's the argument that if it saves just one life..........

What saves lives is both common sense and a lack of violence mentalities. Some people do teach dogs to be vicious or otherwise mistreat them, which causes them to be dangerous.

I used to have a dog that was part Chow and he was ornery from the start. Had to keep him away from people as he just wasn't willing to warm up to people. He was a big lovable mutt to family, but if he didn't know someone, they were smart to keep their distance. If strangers came around, he'd growl and back off and I'd tell them to mind the warning signal. The dog never went after anyone, but did attempt to bite if someone ignored the growling and reached toward him. I could never leave the dog outside in the back yard unattended because I feared that neighbor kids would get bit if they messed with the dog. Common sense, people. Some dogs are very protective of the owners, which is a good thing. Anyone breaking into my house is going to shed blood.

I know some dogs are regular Houdini's and often escape from their chain or fenced yard. It's up to the owners to keep dogs confined or they will rightfully face charges, fines and medical bills if someone gets hurt. If your dog gets loose often, time to come up with a new system.
