Abbas said today a peace agreement can be signed in 2 months. Will the 2 sides seize the momentum, or will the past be re-hashed yet again? I think we all know the answer to that one.

how does abbas agree to peace when he doesn't control the terrorists of hamas?

Good question. How can Abbas make any agreement when his term in office expired in Jan. 2009?

The whole peace process thing is a sham anyway, so I guess it really does not matter.

Well, I phrased this question in a way which was more anti-Israel, in a way. What I really meant, was will Israel stop building settlements long enough to conclude a treaty with Abbas? But I think the pro-Arabists on this Board showed why a treaty with any Palestinian leader would be impossible. "Right of return" means an end to Israel. The fact that Abbas is willing to sign a treaty with Israel and grant independence to the West Bank, means he's a traitor to his people. And then everyone wonders why Israel acts the way she does. Okey-dokey.

The Hamas freedom fighters know that Abbas is a traitor to his people and a puppet of Israel. :doubt:

First of all, that's hardly the case when Abbas refused to negogiate with Israel while Israel is building settlements, and refused generous offers by Olmert. But more than that, why is someone who wants to make peace with Israel a traitor to the Arab people? That's the mindset that killed Sadat (and Rabin on the Israeli side)? This response by Sunni-Man shows why there will never be peace.

Abbas is willing to surrender to Israel and give away the right of his people.

Traitor fits.

And any Israeli willing to give up the West Bank is also called a traitor. This is exactly why there will never be peace. Neither side is willing to make compromises. I'm willing to bet, Mr. Tinmore, that you are not married if you don't know about compromise.
Do you think it would be easy to give up the West Bank? That is the heartland of the Jewish People, not Tel-Aviv. But many Israelis are willing to do that if it meant bringing peace to the region, and giving up the occupation. But once a Palestinian brings up the "right of return" (which Abbas hasn't given up yet), then Israelis think, "You see that? They haven't given up their dream of destroying Israel. A Palestine on the West Bank is just a first step in their ultimate plan." So realistically Mr. Tinmore, what do you want Israel to do? Commit suicide and give over their whole country to Hamas? And the Muslim fanatics that run Hamas would let their new country be run secularly, and not butcher the Jews? Is that what you really think, after what happened in Alexandria over the weekend?

There is no good reason to drag this conflict on forever.

Enforce international law and UN resolutions.

Conflict solved.

Did anyone catch the interview with Livni and Fayyad a couple of weeks ago on the ABC show "This Week"? If so, what did you think of it?

Right of Return?
Midfinger of return, of course, but arabs may try and tempt jooze by offering a return to arab states, jooze had been kicked out of (Iran, Iraq, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt, Iraq, Yemen, Lebanon, Syria), with a restitution of some $30 bln. in assets and property, stolen by arabs. Keeewl and fair.

israel has repeatedly proved it is wiling to negotiate and trade land for peace. it just won't trade it's ability to exist as an independent jewish state. nor should it. but there is nothing to negotiate if the other side sees any compromise as traitorous. so i always laugh when anyone says the failure of the peace process is due to 'both sides'. arafat was offered 98% of what he asked and then said he would be 'drinking tea with rabin' if he cut a deal.

given the current circumstances in which israel is a vital country and the 'palestinians' have no country (despite the fact that they long ago should have been incorporated into fellow arab states), one would think that the palestinians would be more reasonable.

unless of course they wish to continue to be the thorn in the side of everyone around them... both arab and israeli.

No arab leader can negotiate the Palestinian position. The intransigent just wont agree to anything but jewish annihilation. There may be many who will make a rational deal, but there are too many on the palestianian side who believe rationality to be a total sellout.

This is based on the false premise that Israel has any land. Where is it? Where are the borders that define where this land is?
