150th Anniversary of American Civil War: Commemoration or Celibration?

1 out of every 4 Southern families owned at least one slave
.

No fuckin' way!

In the South, at that time, it was a status symbol as well as an economic necessity but what he didn't tell you is in most of these instances the slave lived in the same, small, usually dirt floor cabin, lived, ate and slept with the family and was more often than not treated as one of the family. Not that I'm excusing slavery, just stating fact for fact's sake.

But most southerners were poor and slaves cost big bucks. Just think of how much it would cost you to add another member to your family because that is what it would cost to care for a slave. And the south did not have the hand outs Americans have today.

1 in 4 is a ridiculous figure. Maybe 1 in 20. And most plantations owners began to feel that they were more inslaved to the slave. Today's system of keeping people economic slaves is much better for the rich. No care and feeding.
