That being said, the pic has many messages within, from being your own person, surviving in harsh unfavorable conditions, from rising above all else, being alone in the wilderness and still surviving etc etc..

I think it died of exposure. It was a pine tree. First it lost its needles (died) but still stood for many years. Finally the elements prevailed..
Probably the work of some thug during night.
