If one sets aside the emotional aspect of Canada becoming a "51st State," why should Canada NOT have a common economic and security arrangement with the US? Is it because of Canada's "national identity" problem? Isn't it about time for Canadians to give up their "not American" mantra and start thinking about their real interests like rational adults? Why not consider the following questions?

1. Why do we need an international border with the US?
2. Why do we need a separate currency?
3. Why do we need a separate military?
4. Why do we need to pretend we are British (or French)?
5. Why do we need to be poorer than the US?

  1. Would a state border be any different? At least today you can decide who comes into Canada.
  2. Trump may want to take the US to Bitcoin, hopefully you are smarter than that.
  3. So you can help your friends as you see fit.
  4. Would that change?
  5. You're happier, that should be enough.

They did.
Military: NATO, NORAD
ECONOMIC: USMCA

Now Canada views the US as a military and economic threat. Thanks Trump!
Do you imbeciles not under stand English?

Why again, do you think Canada should operate on the US Dollar vs. Canadian?

I know of no country that does not have their own currency? And we accept Canadian currency here, and they accept the US Dollar there, no? When I was young, living in a beach resort area that had a huge Canadian tourist trade, (in high school) and worked in retail, we accepted Canadian currency....we had a little conversion chart at the register.... I don't know if this is still done today???

And open borders with Canada, means the USA would have say in who they let in to their own country or who they choose to make Canadian citizens....no?

Before 9/11, we went back and forth between Canada and the U.S. with little effort...it was a breeze!

I asked about a common currency because it would be more stable and efficient.

See above.

This is more of a theoretical issue than a practical one. Would it be better for the US to force Canada to militarize the border between them (like Mexico)? Couldn't they agree on immigration policy? Citizenship is a separate issue.

That will change if Canada refuses to police its borders. Why would Canadians want to join the EU instead of forming a North American Union with the US? They need to get over their childish pride and do what is in their best interests, or they will continue their descent into irrelevancy. They need the US much more than the US needs them.
