Because back in the day everybody wore sweat bands and did stuff like this:

 
I'd also highlight technology advancement that has driven the couch potato syndrome: social media, doom-scrolling, job automation, and smartphones, as well as the helicopter parent community, where children aren't allowed to go out and play anymore like they did in the 1970s and 80s and come back home when the streetlights came on.

All of those are factors. Especially the phones/tablets.

The food these days is processed and full of shit. Plus more and more are sat on their backsides behind phones and games consoles. Growing up as a kid in the 70's, I rarely saw a fat kid. In today's world, you need to eat 8 tomatoes to get the same goodness as 1 tomato in the 1940's. Everything is grown fast and genetically modified. And the worst processed food to eat is ultra processed.
