YouTube to allow creators banned for Covid-19, election misinformation to apply for reinstatement

Google-owned YouTube on Tuesday said it will soon allow previously banned accounts to apply for reinstatement, rolling back a policy that had treated violations as permanent.

The change applies to channels removed for posting Covid-19 or election-related misinformation, according to a letter from Alphabet lawyer Daniel Donovan to House Judiciary Chair Jim Jordan, R-Ohio. Previously, those types of offenses carried lifetime bans.

“Today, YouTube’s Community Guidelines allow for a wider range of content regarding Covid and elections integrity,” Donovan wrote.

YouTube wrote on X that it will be a limited pilot project open to a subset of creators as well as channels that were terminated under policies the company has since retired. YouTube also said its new reinstatement program will launch soon.

Among channels previously banned under those rules were some associated with Deputy FBI Director Dan Bongino, former Trump chief strategist Steve Bannon and Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. It’s not yet clear whether those channels will be reinstated.

This move follows mounting Republican pressure on tech companies to reverse Biden-era speech policies on vaccine and political misinformation.
In March, Rep. Jordan subpoenaed Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai, alleging YouTube was a “direct participant in the federal government’s censorship regime.”

In 2021, YouTube said it would remove content that spread misinformation about all approved vaccines.

YouTube bans high-profile anti-vaccine accounts, says it will block all vaccine misinformation

Google-owned YouTube banned prominent anti-vaccine accounts in an effort to strengthen its policies on misinformation around vaccines, the company said in a blog post Wednesday. It will also ban misinformation on all vaccines that are confirmed to be safe by the World Health Organization and local health authorities.

Social media companies have said since the beginning of the pandemic that they’re trying to stop the spread of coronavirus misinformation. But falsehoods have continued to run rampant as companies struggle to police the constant flood of posts and uploads to their platforms.

It's more than a little paradoxical how trump's FCC chairman attacks the rights of comedians to ridicule Don on national TV while Repub congressmen spend their time cajoling social media platforms to allow more lies and misinformation to be posted without regulation. Then again, maybe it isn't since misinformation is their stock and trade.

Misinformation is progspeak for "opinions I don't like but even we don't have the ability to call it lying"

Simple enough solution.

Hold Social Media Platforms to the same libel and slander standards as Newspapers, Rado and TV Stations.

YouTube has no problem banning stuff for using music or video that posters have no right to, even though the "Fair Use" doctrine should apply, a lot of content creators get strikes for using clips.

The "misinformation" about Covid Vaccine requires about a million traitors to be prosecuted...

The "misinformation" = safe, effective, needed

The TRUTH = completely and deliberately unsafe, completely ineffective and 100% not needed

Misinformation is progspeak for "opinions I don't like but even we don't have the ability to call it lying"

Sure we do. But calling it lying isn't good enough.

There are idiots who actually believe that Tylenol causes Autism and horse dewormer treats Covid because some idiot on YouTube said so.

No comment on Biden's censorship, just TDS whining. Amazing you derailed your own thread in its creation. Pathetic.
Writing for a liberal-conservative coalition of six justices, Justice Amy Coney Barrett said that neither the five individuals nor the two states who sued the government had legal standing to be in court at all. She said they presented no proof to back up their claims that the government had pressured social media companies like Twitter and Facebook into restricting their speech. "Unfortunately," she said, the Fifth Circuit court of appeals "relied on factual findings that are "clearly erroneous."

For instance, she said, the plaintiffs who brought the case maintained that the White House had bombarded Twitter with requests to set up a streamlined process for censorship requests. But in fact, she said, the record showed no such requests. Rather, on one occasion a White House official asked Twitter to remove a fake account pretending to be the account of Biden's granddaughter. Twitter took down the fake account and told the official about a portal that could be used in the future to flag similar issues.

"Justice Barrett went out of her way to stress that facts matter and that lower courts in this case embraced a fact-free version of what transpired between officials in the Biden administration and Facebook, Twitter and other social media companies," said law professor Paul Barrett, no relation to the justice, who is deputy director of the Stern Center for Business and Human Rights at NYU.

You know nothing.

There are studies showing concern about it, one even from Harvard. It's comical how you dismiss some studies out of hand and then cling to the gun control one that's been debunked 100 times.

Ivermectin has human uses as well. Lasix is used on horses, does that make it a horse medicine only?

Approved for human use in 1987,[10] it is used to treat infestations including head lice, scabies, river blindness (onchocerciasis), strongyloidiasis, trichuriasis, ascariasis and lymphatic filariasis

That wasn't Google, you are spreading misinformation and lies. Try harder.

Republicans held a hearing to prove Twitter’s bias against them. It backfired in spectacular fashion

Republicans are living in a reality distortion field.

That is the only conclusion that can be drawn from Wednesday’s hearing on Capitol Hill where GOP lawmakers continued to push a factually unsupported narrative about the federal government secretly colluding with Twitter to censor the New York Post’s Hunter Biden laptop story in 2020.

Despite no real evidence to support this weighty and consequential claim, Republicans were unrelenting in peddling it to the American public. At Wednesday’s hearing they showed no regard for misinforming those who turn to them for accurate information or the fact that they were smearing a private business and its former executives in the process.

You can wipe that egg off your face any time now.

Any time you're ready to answer this question..........

Why are some congressional Repubs pushing for lower standards governing misinformation?

.......I'm all ears. Otherwise, **** off.

Hey, you should use ivermectin, but you don't have any horse sense. You are full of horse shit, though.

Only the right would put a heroin addict with a brain worm in charge of public health and think everything is fine.

As usual, I call out your bullshit, and you deflect.

Only the left puts a man who pretends they are a woman in charge of health.

Do you have fantasies about trannies every night?

I like science. YOu like praying to an imaginary sky daddy.

More deflection.

You like bullshit studies parading as science.

I keep telling you I am a lapsed Catholic, pretty much agnostic. What I don't have is your hatred of people of faith.

Even someone as stupid as you should be able to distinguish between Twitter and Google. Just stare at the letters really hard and the difference should become clear.

Uh, huh... that's why you think that gay people should be oppressed, because you are agnostic.

What's the obsession with gay people? Did you have an unfortunate encounter in a bar when the beer goggles set in?

I'm saying you can't oppress religious people just because they believe homosexuality is immoral.

If you could call it that, my obsession is with rights hating idiots like you.

Evidently you think the feelings of some guy who wants to pretend he's a girl overrides without question the rights of actual girls to be comfortable in places like restrooms and changing rooms.
