Whodunnit? Attempted Internet dismantlement interrupted.

Apparently someone was trying to disrupt the internet and cripple it during the upcoming UN meetings.
Why would they do that?

Who would benefit from disrupted medtings?

Who wants WAR?
(I can think of a few)

Goodness grief, look at all those SIM cards...

The labels above are just Arabic numerals - not Chinese writing or anything.

Wish I could get a better view of this outlet converter....

Yeah....gets too grainey when blown up.

But it's over 100k of sim cards.

That says BRICS .....someone from the BRIC consortium is ultimately behind this. Iran, China, Russia, Albania....take your pick.

From the SS report:
While forensic examination of these devices is ongoing, early analysis indicates cellular communications between nation-state threat actors and individuals that are known to federal law enforcement.

“The potential for disruption to our country’s telecommunications posed by this network of devices cannot be overstated,” said U.S. Secret Service Director Sean Curran. “The U.S. Secret Service’s protective mission is all about prevention, and this investigation makes it clear to potential bad actors that imminent threats to our protectees will be immediately investigated, tracked down and dismantled.”

Secret Service says:

  • There were multiple threats made against senior US official via telecommunications devices this Spring.
  • The investigation of these fraudulent calls resulted in the discovery of this telcom network.
  • The network could be used to shutdown the cellular network in NYC, say after a terrorist attack. It would disrupt emergency communications.
  • They know many of the parties involved but won't tell us. Both the country involved and the local criminals.

The fact that they set up this anonymous encrypted network at quite an expense (hundreds of thousands of dollars or more) indicates that there is a large and active criminal network in NYC.

On a positive note, I have stopped receiving calls about my car warranty expiring soon. :auiqs.jpg:

NBC News says:
  • Network had been used to make assassination threats and other criminal activity.
  • Firearms, 80 grams of cocaine, computers were also found.

"It was also unclear if the network was linked to a spate of incidents earlier this year that saw unknown actors impersonate White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Over the summer, a State Department cable said an unknown person left voice and text messages for at least five people, including “three foreign ministers, a US governor and a US member of Congress” after creating a Signal account that pretended to be Rubio’s in mid-June."

All with different phone numbers?
Probably not. Maybe 4 at max.

This is a 100k different phone numbers....DIDs.
These have been used extensively in Ukraine by both sides for Electronic Warfare. You really don't need a cell phone for each one. That's why they are in racks.

The real problem is that this attack was done by external States internally....

We need to REALLY REALLY Crack down on illegal immigration and immigrants.

The innocent have already found a way back out. Now it's a matter of prying out the ones guilty of crimes or of planning crimes. (I think they have found most of the children....dunno)

Now it's time to grab the adult terrorists and "ne'er do wells".

It was a joke.

Other than clog up cell signals for a few hours, I am not really sure what the threat here would be in and of itself.

Everything from DOS attacks to pointed virus attacks. Lots of things and because it's cellular it means communications have to be taken offline until you can find the source. These racks of Sim cards....and if they are linked and interconnected to multiple sites....the whole 35 mile area has to be pulled down until the entire network is dismantled.

TBH when I saw the set up, "terrorism" wasn't what sprang to mind. To me it looks like a robocalling/robotext set up like I would expect to see with the "You Have Won the Nigerian Lottery. We just need your bank account information" type operations

They run about $10 each retail (link), so that would be $1M before bulk discount.

This is the SIM card bank... (link)

300 of these will set you back another $1.1M.

There must have been some pretty big plans in the works.
