Not the drill into the jawbone kind, either. The other ones..where ya spit 'em out in a jar at night kind.

What are the pros and cons? Do you hate them? Do you love them? Do you gag? Get mouth sores? Do they clack when they come unglued? Does the glue bonding stuff taste nasty? Were they really expensive?

I ask because I may have to go that route. My teeth are falling apart due to the RA and the meds I am taking. I have no insurance. I might be able to get a loan from a friend IF that is the route I go. Otherwise, every few months, another one will wind up with a cavity and that's another 250 bucks down the drain. So instead of going that way...the dentist and I have a consult on whether dentures would work. But that's with him. I want to know from people who already have them what the bad and good is about dentures.

Help!

Oh come on now. No smart ass remarks about how great BJs are gonna be for the hubby? No pics of a toothless hag? No teeth in jars? No animated clackers? No answers at all?

Seriously...am I going to regret having this done or should I try like hell to keep the teefers I got?

Are implants a possibility?

That's the only thing I could contribute about.

My friend, when he was younger, had something like dentures (hell they might have been dentures I don't know the nomenclature) but it only had the few teeth he was missing; he would put it in all day and take them out at night. But then he got implants put in. Maybe that helps?

I have them. I hate them. I don't even wear them anymore. I can eat just about anything I ate before although salads can be difficult at times.

How to describe dentures? Well, go get a piece of bread, load it with peanut butter and then stick it to the roof of your mouth and leave it there for eight hours... annoying as hell!

Yes, they make me gag or made me gag.

As for the good part about dentures... give me six months and I might be able to come up with something.

I can't do implants. That is jawbone drilling. Into the bone. And that is the problem. My bones are brittle now and getting worse.

Just wanting to find out if anyone has clackers like these, and what they think of them:

Thanks Emmanuel. I have been googling like crazy and I see people posting they hate them...and people posting they love them.

TheOldSchool..I have a friend that got implants about 3 years ago. She has insurance, so her share was 25,000.00. EEK!!

Holy smokes!!! I need to ask my friend about that then! I wonder if that's even something I can acceptably ask them about?

I would suggest getting a quote. When I got my dentures, I inquired about implants and I remember my dentist saying they were somewhere in the $4000 range but that could have been $4000 for the top and $4000 for the bottom. I didn't have 4 grand sitting around so I didn't even consider going that route.

After googling, the cost varies for uppers AND lowers anywhere from 3 grand to 25 grand...depending on the material, the dentist and the custom work. My friend is rich. Actually, she had it done TWICE. Her mouth is worth 50,000.00.

If it is 3 or 4 grand...I plan to ask if he will take half down and the other half on payments. Maybe. Depends on if a friend can come thru with loaning me the money and me pay HIM back. I dunno. I'm still pondering it. Not an easy decision. Almost as bad as the damn lumpectomy or mastectomy/radiation or chemo or HRT. I have lots of questions to ask the dentist, explore my own options, see what is doable. Or...none of the above and just have him fill the two teeth and hope like hell it's just a fluke and in 6 months during my next cleaning, there will be no cavities.

My mother would kill me if I ever got to the point where I needed dentures...given how my parents spent a small fortune on orthodontia.

I searched and found a bunch of answers on the implant topic and this answer is pretty much the main gist of all of them

OK - a couple of things you need to know.

First, no dental insurance will pay for them. They're considered cosmetic, elective surgery even if you don't have a tooth in your mouth. So, they get treated the same way a plastic surgeon would - no insurance payments.

Second, most places do have a payment plan, but they're expensive as hell. If you find a place that will do them for $4-500 - and yes, there are places like that - remember, you get what you pay for and if you're lucky, they'll last a year. I have a couple that are about 6 years old and they cost a little over $4000. I wanted to get another one about a year ago and the price, including follow-up exams and exams during the course of the implantation (this isn't something you do at one sitting) was $6000 for one damned tooth!! I just left the space vacant since its in the back and no one can see it. So, be prepared to pay a lot and if you finance it, be prepared to be paying a long, long time!

:(

Some recommended getting it done through a dental school because it's cheaper... but I don't know about that...

Or, if I decide to go for just the uppers...then that could be anywhere from 1500.00 to 2000.00.

That's 8 fillings right there. 2 grand.

Ma and Dad didn't pay for braces and whatnot..but they did make sure I took care of my teeth by havig them cleaned and fillings done and whatnot. My teeth right now are fine. These are very small cavities...but...my bone density is not the greatest. Tamoxifen causes bone loss. Teeth are bones. I don't wanna be toothless!!! Or have ugly rotty looking teeth. That may take 20 years to happen if it happens at all. I'm just lining up my ducks again.

I had my teeth cleaned just prior to my surgery. So it's been like 5 months. There were no cavities then in these two teeth. So in 5 months..I get two. Either the dentist missed them...or they developed after I started the Tamoxifen. So I am ileaning to go ahead and have the two filled and in 6 months if I have more cavities..then I will know my teeth are suffering from the drug. If there are no other cavities, then it is NOT the Tamoxifen and the Dentist missed the two developing ones.

Make sense?

Are you sure tamoxifen causes bone loss? From what I'm seeing it only does so in very rare instances and in fact often protects against it. I also wish you luck in whatever it is you're using if for...

It sounds like you have plenty of time to figure it out. Wait and see. And don't worry about it. We're all going to have dentures one day anyways . If the forums are still around then I'll flame everyone about how mine are the best

Tamoxifen is a cancer drug. It can cause bone loss (which is why the doc ordered a bone density test recently), and I have Rhuematoid Arthritis. The combo seems to be making my bones thinner.
And thank you for the good wishes. :)

Great news! With dentures you can still eat ribs!!! For me that would eliminate any possible concerns :clap2:

So worry not! : )
